inspection marks on 68 8in rearend?
« on: August 04, 2012, 12:39:47 AM »
This was uncovered when I cleaned the grime off my diff.  It's on the bottom of the housing.

Car is a 68 J Code Coupe Jan 68 built in SJ with 3.00 gears.  It is original to the car.

Is it just an identifier for the inspector or does it have some other significance?

Owned since 1981

Sorry - no help here. Have seen allot of these but have not been able to establish a pattern. Application started in 68 and was carried through at least the early 70's with this location and pattern. Have other examples where they have identifiers other than this. Seems IMHO that its pretty large for an inspector or assembler mark.

Thanks for sharing - another one for the files. ;)

+1  Havent been able to ever make sense of most of them. Current one I'm working on has 610 or 019 depending which way you look at it

Here is our SJ 7-16-68 build 8 inch. It is similar, I do not know what the marks mean either. Marty

Those are basically the same markings on the rear end in the Shelby we just did!

What year Shelby??  Doesn't do allot of extra benefit without the details ;)

Looks to be the same hand writing/same worker applying it at the rearend plant
Well since one is a 8" and one a 9"  I guess we can assume that its not an identifier of the type, style or application. Leaning towards inspector or assembler with this "match"

Could it maybe be a code from manufacturing and painting just the housings? Cause the two cars were made on opposite sides of the country!

I think there was only one plant assembling the rearends in the late 60's - kind of like the engines. So in these cases I would not expect to see similar markings except for what ever the assembly plant added like rotation numbers and indicators of lube being added or hardware that held them in place torqued.

Just my current understanding of things. Think I still have a t-shirt from the rearend plant somewhere around here - and no guys it does not still fit :(

Probably Sterling Axle in Sterling Heights, MI.  Opened in 1956.  Still cranking the out today.

These are pix of my '68 SJ june build. The marking is "N5". According to the ID tag, it's 2.79 gears. Full tag reads  WCZ-VL    2.79   8FA  930.

The Sept 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly featured a '70 Boss302 with 2,400 miles unrestored original. It's marking is 'M20' with 3.91 Traction-Lok axle , look on page 28.
