That's what I thought, that plug towards the top didn't look right...

The plug is used for an external Temp guage under the dash.. for anyone wondering... Just remove the plug and insert a standard temp sending unit...and voila..instant temp guage.. Summit sells nice 2" and 2 1/4" Autometer temp guages... or just use an old SW - Stewart Warner one from a swap meet..lol...

That's not right.  This is a Ford t-stat housing for a later 289/302 with emissions control.

That's not right.  This is a Ford t-stat housing for a later 289/302 with emissions control.

+1 for no temp sender, it was for a temp controlled vacuum switch with ports going to the intake, carb and vacuum advance

Plus the temp sensor should be on the engine side of the thermostat.

The plug is used for the heat activated vacuum swich for the distributor advance curve  from the factory. It can be used as you say but most factory and after market aluminum intakes already have a place for a temp sender . I don't know why you would need two?
