GT tip projection
« on: July 31, 2012, 05:36:29 PM »
How far should the GT tips project out from the rear valance?  Is there a correct dimension?

I was told that the small end of the cone where it is welded to the pipe should be directly over the bottom  fixing on the stainless steel hole trim in the valance.
I set mine up like this and they look right.

Not sure but isn't the desired location notated in the assembly manual for the cars?

Thought I had seen that mentioned before

Assembly manual only shows a drawing (64.5-65 Chassis, Pg. 9-3.  As best as I can figure, the beginning of the major necking down to the 2 1/4" pipe from the GT exhaust tip is even with the bottom of the valence opening.

The 66 service manual show about the same, about where the transition from pipe to trumpet is located to the bottom of the ring. The only dimensions are the position of the trumpet, "concentric within 3/16inch".

Concentric within 3/16"?  Really?  How the heck do you pull that off?  The adjustment would have to be made at the rear most hanger right?  The trumpets have to be in alignment or they will not be level.

Those tips look like they project out to the bumper.

It's a deceptive dimension. Whatever extension length the trumpet is, it must be centered with a tolerence of 3/16 of an inch. That means if the "gap"is 1/2 inch, or 5/8 inch, or 3/4 inch, it must within 3/16 all the way around.
(Mentally picture a 4 inch diameter funnel centered in a 3 inch diameter pipe, now move it up or down.)
How you do that is moving the tip in and out and moving the brackets up and down (final adjustment with a 4 pound sledge hammer).

Still not working. It appears that the "early-mustang" domain is no longer active as the link directs me to a SEDO domain parking page.
