1970 Console Glove box color
« on: July 27, 2012, 11:54:36 PM »
On my 70 Mach 1 with blue interior built Sept 12, 69 in Metuchen, I know the console should be blue, but should the inside of the console glove box and flocking also be blue? The same blue as the outside of the console?

If there is any of the textured plastic showing on the inside then it should be Blue. The Flocking should always be Black on any color of Console Glove Box, IMHO.

Speaking of this has anybody else seen a cougar console lid on a dearborn 70 mustang?

My '70 Boss 302 was built at Metuchen, NJ in November, 1969. Blue interior with blue console. Inside of console box has original blue. Tell me, what is meant by
" flocking" ?

Ed, I have never seen the Shelby-XR7 lid on any other Mustang that was Original to that Mustang but I have not seen them all.

fla2005, the Flocking is the Felt liner inside the Console Glove Box.

Do you have any felt left? If so, is the felt liner inside your box blue also or is only the plastic blue?

Flocking is bulk loose felt. Try http://www.detailmaster.com/ scroll down on the left center. I used it on my 66 K Fastback's console. Practice on a small 6 x 6 x 6 box with wet same color spray paint and sprinkle a lot. Use some newspaper (there is another use other than birdcages) under what you are flocking, gather up the fallout and reuse ASAP.

My Nov 68 built SJ Mach 1 had the ribbed lid when I bought it over 30 years ago.
It had splits at the corners so I changed it to the Mustang spec type.
Since Cougars came down the SJ and Dearborn line too, workers didn't always get it right.
I've seen blue, red, green, brown consoles on eBay and the flock has always been black IIRC, but it's not something I really took note of.

Would the outside of the of the insert be blue to match the rest of the console and the inside of the insert be black with black flocking?

Do not have any blue 70 consoles at hand to check - so can not be sure but the 71 (likely the same pattern) are black with any of the consoles. Would IMHO make sense to have the flock and insert be the same color

I think Jeff is just having a little brain fart.  :P because I know he knows his Consoles.

The 71-73 console glove box insert is all Black with Black Flocking on any color of Console because the only thing visible on that once installed is the inside of the insert. The console base on 71-73 is 1 piece that rolls up in front of the glove box section and does not have the visible front of the glove box like 69-70. I am 99.9999% sure that your Blue Console should have a Visible Blue Front on the glove box insert. I do not recall ever having seen colored flocking in any of the 100's of 69-70 Consoles I have had.

Mag i have seen 3 70 mustangs dearborn ( because they only made cougars 69-70 at dearborn ) that had 3 hump console lids.  2 cars were original owners & 1 mach 1 had 3 owners but dont know if it was an assembly line goof-up or they ran short on mustang lids at the time.

Ed, There is always a chance that they could have been assembly line installed, I'm just not sure how that could be documented. Last year I did a 69 Cougar with Decor Interior(Not XR7) that had the 3 hump console lid, but the glove box insert and 69 rear lighter were NOS parts so that means they had been replaced at some point after the Factory. With some of the Console Parts having been replaced I couldn't say for sure that the Ribbed Lid hadn't been replaced also. I think that was a Dearborn car, but not positive and it was a 69 not a 70.

There is always a chance that Ford did not want to hold up delivering a car because they ran out of Standard Console Lids.

I have also done two 69 Cougars in the past couple years that were 'R' San Jose Built Cars. And there were at least some 70 Cougar Eliminators built in San Jose also, if I recall my conversation with (Eliminator Registrar)Dave Wyras correctly. I spoke to him trying to confirm Factory Eliminator Status on a 70 Cougar and I asked him if all 70 Eliminators were built in Dearborn and he said some were built in San Jose. I'm pretty sure that is what he said but I can't find my emails between us that I thought I saved. It seems like the Majority of my previous 69-70 Cougar VINs show Dearborn.

Yes your correct in that the front of what becomes the glove box is part of the forward section that held the cig lighter on some.

Have to dig one out tomorrow though I believe all I have are black ones at the garage
