wheel cylinder confusion

redoing my braskes on my 70 mach 1 .looks like there is a lh an a rh  but not sure which goes where any pics for info

Hmmm not the easiest to find a picture of or something we take many of in the first place.

You could check the numbers if they are new to determine the driver and the passenger sides

The guide appears to be that the brake line attaches/enters the rear side of the wheel cylinders. The emergency brake cable enters into the forward half of the backing plate for orientation

Believe this is pretty standard for all years and models

I thought in '70 the same cylinder was used both sides and the axle mounted brake line shape was changed so that one went in the "front".  Maybe this varies with engine size?  The aftermarket catalogs list the same cylinder for both sides for 1970 351 & 428 cars.  These are handed in 1969, but I thought this changed in 1970.

hi Jeff this is how i purchased my wheel cyl. l.h and r.h .but it seems when i go and install the brake line on the rear axle i will have to bend the pass. side to make it line up with the threaded hole . maybe what rockhouse 66 is saying may be correct because if i use the same "handed" one as the driver side the brake line will  thread right in . anyone have a unrestored car that the rear brakes are orginal .

ps the old ones i took off were" handed" the same ( l.h )

You guys could be correct - don't have a 70 or up at home to compare. If they are both the same (left and right) not sure of what the first post was referring to

Just trying to help ;) Might need to visit the parts house and have them check the application and part numbers again.

NPD catalog online shows same number for both drivers and passengers side.

Something it appears that was new for 70

My m-code 69 mach1 still had he original rear slaves when I dissasembled last month. They were nondirectional so the RH brake line port faced toward front. The replacement brake lines I purchased from mustangs unlimited were prebent to accept this aspect. The car is a january dearborn build.

Joe, The 1970 Boss 302/429/428CJ used the C30Z-2262-B wheel cyl. Left & Right. According to the Ford master parts book the 351 for 1970 used the same C30Z-2262-B Left & Right.

ok i guess that is what i shuld do also . does that mean that the 351 car used a different brake line on the axle

Joe,

 I recently obtained an aftermarket brake parts catalog: Brakes Parts for DRUM equipped Passenger Cars & Trucks; 1960 – 73 printed by EIS Brake Corporation, copyright April 1973. It lists the rear drum wheel cylinder for a 1970 Ford Mustang ( for 351 & 428 ), as the same part number, meaning they are the same for either side. This also confirms my own personal experience recently when I purchased both rear brake wheel cylinders for my car from a vendor out West. This vendor listed two (2) separate part numbers, one for the left and a different part number for the right. When I received them and to my dismay, only one wheel cylinder fit correctly and lined up with the brake line fitting. The one cylinder that did fit correctly also fit the opposite side..

So, I decided to purchase an aftermarket catalog in hopes of understanding the correct part required for my application (hence the reason for obtaining this catalog) and it pretty much firms up what others have said here..

yes that is what i have found out they are both the same (like the driver side ). the brake line fit ike a glove

This is also a practice with the 68 Shelbys and BB Mustangs. They use the 2262 (rh) cylinders left and right. It really gets confusing because the Shelbys are also all 31 spline axles but use the 28 spline rear hose and brake lines.
