65-66 Blue Alternator Fans and Pulleys
« on: January 03, 2010, 03:27:50 AM »
The post is a continuation of a 67 alternator thread and an effort to keep things nice and tiddy around here ;)

There was allot of discussion a few years back on HiPo Mustang eKschange about this subject. Basically it appears that a very very few alternators were supplied during 65 and  66 production with blue (yes like Ford Corporate blue) alternator fans and pulleys

Here is a picture that was part of that discussion. It appears to be an assembly or pilot plant picture and possibly a staged one

Here is a enlargement of one of those engines

In addition here is a picture of what was discribed as car built shortly after June 65 V8 Mustang. Ink stamp on rear of alternator is JUNE 1x x965 (can not make out) . Sorry no VIN so no idea of what plant but it appears to be a fairly low mileage car.

Alternator out of the car

Have a few more I will post later

Jeff,
When I dissembled my July 65 Dearborn car. It had what I believe to be the original alternator(I am the 2nd owner). I couldn't tell at the time because the 13 blade fan and pulley were so rusted, but when I removed the pulley and fan, they both had blue paint on the mating surfaces. The pulley also had the numbers "C5AF 10A352-G1" and "S" stamped on the backside. I had always wondered if this was correct as the MCA Judging rule book (1997 edition at the time) indicated it had to be black or natural. I purchased natural ones to install for show. Would it still be considered incorrect if I installed blue ones?

Jeff that is the alternator on my 10K vert.Dearborn car.The date is June 13 1965.The dor tag has a proposed build date of May 13 but I belive that the car was actually built closer to June 20th.My June 16 coupe also has the blue pulley.
The earlyest documented(with pictures) blue fan is on a May 24 coup that was sold on May 29th in Tenn.
The latest I have documented is on an Aug car.
All have been Dearborn cars. The one possable exception is a transition Shelby.
For about 5 years now the MCA has allowed blue fans and pulleys on late 65s.

Jeff, see what you've done :o

Couldn't see a more appropriate location to discuss the point ;)

Mike - remembered you had one also. Figured I would get to yours in a second post along with one or two others. Beat me too it ;)

Notice the upper mounting bracket is different.

Noticed the same - now since we don't know the specific details of what car that picture came from (guess it could be another line_) we may not be able to explain that - but lets see what the others have to offer  :)

The mounting bracket is different because the car has factory A/C.

Here is a shot from one of Mike's low mile cars. - 5F07C780692

Had seen some back in the 70-80's but always assumed it was just a kid/owner with a rattle sort of thing.  Never paid  any attention to them until the subject came up a few years back

And another from a source I'll holding back on right now since its a single finding way outside the pattern we have so far.

My K coupe came with a blue fan, built April 4, 1966 in Metuchen. Ordered new by my dad, took a lot of flack at MCA shows in the 80's about it but he wouldn't change it because that was the way it came.

Do the alternators with the blue fan & pulley have a part identification ink stamp?

Those often do not stand up well to the test of time. I do not have any of that info from the ones I posted, but then again I might have a picture of the stamp from the one on Mile's car.

The alternator off Mike's convertible has the original Autolite stamp on it and is date coded June 17, 1965.

Hi to all;

I restored the engine and trans. on a 66 Shelby (6S502), in 1998.  The car was very original, with one repaint, never any rust, or accidents.  In fact, the car was sold here, in my hometown in southern Oregon, and I remember seeing it when I was a kid! It was a one-owner car until 1997.  It now belongs to one of my best friends.  When I restored the engine, it had a blue alternator pulley and fan.  Of course, the rest of the drivetrain was all original.

Hope this helps!

So it looks as if the blue fan was a mid/late year thing for 65.

I have a 10/64 Dearborn fastback, what finish should the fan
and pulley be on my alternator?
