Scott drake dash pads
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:20:06 PM »
Come remotely close to the look and feel of OEM?

Had a Dashes Direct and tossed it... nice fit, but way off for look and feel...  having a hard time finding an OEM locally and as a large parcel individuals shipping to Australia pay a lot more than the vendors who get bulk rates...

How does the Drake compare to OEM?

There's a reason people pay big money for original dash pads. No mass produced dash pad is going to satisfy a purist.

I get that, just wondering if they are as bad as the Dashes Direct or not...

I have not seen the Drake one yet. It is hard to understand why it is so difficult to make a mold with the correct grain.

We are a Drake dealer and as far as I know Dashes Direct is all he carries!

Sooo.. I'm not sure but it looks like you are saying if you buy a "Scott Drake" dash pad they are just reselling DD as SD?

No they don't claim them as SD dash pads they are in fact DD and if you were to call them directly and ask they should tell you that's what they carry if not then they are not telling the truth. But we order all are dashes from them 65-73, they have OE tooling for all years but 67-68 which are also made by dashes direct. We just sampled another company's 67-8 pad but it didn't fit well.

Has there been any updates to this situation? I agree, the DD dash just feels & looks altogether wrong (I have a new one and was unhappy instantly upon opening the box, I still haven't put it in yet)
I thought I was buying an original pad a few weeks ago & I drove completely across Pennsylvania to pick it up along with a C4 transmission. I ended up leaving the (thought originally to be OE) dash behind...It was obviously a re-pop of sorts too.
I was hoping to put the interior back in sometime later this year, following the rotisserie work, this item might still be a roadblock.

That's '65, talking 67-8 here.

As far as I know, there is still no acceptable dash pad being reproduced.  Originals in excellent condition have skyrocketed in value.  I sold a mint black '68 dash pad about 6 months ago for $1200.

I believe that there are some 'older' repro pads that are much closer in appearance.  I found one of these a while back and with a fresh coat of dye, looks pretty decent.  Probably would not pass in concours, but very presentable for a weekend cruiser.

Upon reading all of these responses again, I cannot tell if anybody actually has ordered or installed a Scott Drake dash pad into a 67-68.

QUESTION! Has any of you:
1.) SD dealers actually handled one personally? (not the sale, the pad itself)
2.) Installed one personally?
3.) Sold any that the cuss-tummer complained about?

FACT: Scott Drake claims them as Original Ford tooling, urethane filled & will never crack (like originals, they never crack, only shrink) and when you see a photo of them, they are flimsey-looking, like the originals, not rigid like the DD or other branded aftermarket variety.

Have the masses jumped to a conclusion here? I'm just wondering. I sure don't wish to pay big $$$ on an original, to get it here and find out it is shrunken like my desert-baked original pad is. I am looking into a couple used "original" pads now. Hoping this question is answered without the speculatory chatter, but instead FACTS that are based on actual experience with the Scott Drake brand...Just like this post started out asking.

I have had no experience with the Scott Drake pads. It has been my understanding that the original Ford tooling was destroyed and that is why there has been no good reproductions. I hope they are as good as claimed.

Same here.  I posted a thread several months ago about why there were no Original Tooling '67-68 dash pads available.  The tooling was damaged/destroyed years ago.
Too much junk, too little time.
