GT Transmission
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:32:27 PM »
Just want clarification, all 1965 Factory GT's were 4-speeds unless specifically ordered with a different transmission, correct?

IMHO, GT was a package that didn't specify gear box, so all GTs were 3-speeds  (3.03 base gear box) unless something else was ordered.

This is correct if the GT was an A code.  For a '65 K code ordered as a GT or non-GT, it could only come with a 4 speed close ratio trans.  For a '66 K code, the transmission options were again a 4 speed or a specially modified C4 automatic transmission.

Thanks Charles, just wanted to confirm an automatic was not an option unless the car was some kind of special order...

From your reply it sounds like there's still some confusion Chris. A '65 or '66 "A" code GT came with a 3 speed as standard. An automatic or a 4 speed were both available as options. A "K" code GT only came with a 4 speed in '65; or standard with a 4 speed in '66, with an automatic available as an option. I realize that's a summary of the previous replies already given, but hopefully clarifies it for you.

1965...There was a car that a friend of mine was looking and they "claim" it was a GT but it had a automatic transmission...Just haven't seen a 65 factory GT with automatic transmission and I can't seem to find in any book that I have that said what kind of transmission they came with.  I know all K codes were 4 speeds but don't know what an A-code factory GT could come with...

Don't get confused. The standard transmission (meaning it was part of the base price) for all 1965 and 66 factory "A" code GT Mustangs was a three speed manual transmission. There were two "you pay extra" options, a four speed (some were T-10 but most were Ford toploaders) and an automatic C-4. All 1965 "K" code Mustangs whether they were a GT or not came with a close ratio Ford toploader and it was on an extra "you pay for it" line on the invoice. In 1966 a modified C-4 automatic was also an option for the "K" engine cars whether they were a GT or not, as well as the Ford close ratio top loader. You paid for them as a seperate line on the invoice too. Two different packages with overlapping options.
