Seat Belt Plastic Retainer Pins for 64 Convertible
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:39:17 PM »
Anyone know where to find the 'seat belt plastic retainer pins' that hold the two seat belt hooks together after they hook onto the eye bolt on the floor? Thanks.

Are you looking for someone other than Python Restoration?

IIRC the Python Restoration ones are not correct. I do not have the picture any longer but they had large wing like things on them.  NPD used to sell the correct ones but they do not have them and not getting them back in. (I may be mistaken for Ssnake Oy it has been a few years)

Brian-
When I went on the look for these a couple of years ago all of the major supply houses that I called had stopped carrying them. Not sure what the "correct" ones should look like as mine didn't have the correct seat belts to begin with, but Python was the only vendor that even had something to use. Wonder if there's a liability issue or just a supply / demand issue that everyone seems to have dropped them.

Believe this is simply a supply/demand thing.  A friend of mine here locally had a run of 500 or so made about 15 years ago and from what I understand, he sold most of his stock to parts sellers.  To him, this was just a one time thing, I seriously doubt he would do another run.

Correct ones look like a pop rivet if you will. There is a male piece and a female piece, both circles. My good belts are where I can not get to them however I am going to dig something out of storage this week and have another four 64.4 belts where I actually know where they are and I will try to get a picture if there is a rivet on it. Can someone post a Python one to compare?

ALSO is was indeed Ssnake Oyl that has the incorrect ones, found my old thread on another mustang website that most of us used to go to.

That looks nothing like the originals I've seen.  They were round domed head with a shaft, opaque plastic.

I haven't installed mine from Python yet, I'll get a picture in the next day or two and post.

Charles,
Sorry I did not elaborate...the picture was indeed the WRONG style. I will try to get a picture tomorrow if the belts have any left of them.

I took the original carpet out of my 64.5 convertible this year. I destroyed them when I took them off never imagining that I couldn't replace them.
Yes, they looked like a pop rivet, like a 'fish eye' shaped piece of clear/white plastic, on both sides of the belt hooks. Almost like a tiny button not much bigger around than the hole they go through.
I don't know how you could recarpet without replacing them.
It has only been a few months since I saw the originals so I might try to improvise with something.
They are not under any pull or stress, just keep the two hooks from separating.
Just thinking out loud, but a drop from a glue stick might be a start.

I would use the incorrect plastic ones before glue.

Here is a picture of the correct style and the company that made them. They are no longer being made though, and I've not found anyone else who makes the correct style. I bought these from KAR Mustang about a year ago and it was the last of their stock. The ones on top are the correct style (Tarheel Restorations), the picture on bottom are the ones from Python that are not correct.

Some dimensions would help. See http://www.wclco.com/pdf/plastics/041.pdf

If someone could post the correct head diameter, that might help find a suitable alternative.  I know that the Datsun 260Z I'm working on right now uses those plastic rivets, but in a larger size (I think).  I also know the local Ace Hardware stocks those in a couple of sizes in the loose hardware aisle.
