Late 69 battery apron.
« on: June 01, 2012, 07:51:47 PM »
At a recent show there was some discussion about whether the late 69 cars were originally delivered with a pre-punched hole for the L shaped battery bracket (not focusing on if the bracket was used in 69, just if the hole was present). Common belief has been is that the apron with the hole was a later (70) and a detail on service replacements. Thought it would be a good idea to address this the best we can and in turn provide information for owners and judges alike.

Here is a shot of a service replacement panel - arrow shows the hole being discussed.

I invite documentation and evidence while I explore the pictures I have. Thanks

I have two 1969 Dearborn Cougars with that apron here at WCCC.

The ones dated 13F and 18G, have the apron with the requested style apron, 18F does not. These are all cars with original panels, and they all have the VIN stamped on the passenger side shock towers.
Scheduled build dates known, actual build dates unknown.

Thanks - since the 18F could have been assembled before 13F that might indicate a change over date. Guess that if the hole has been used to add the L bracket by a PO then that would remove that car from the sampling but we should be able to tell a punched hole from a screw hole ;)

Will see what I have in pictures when I find some time

An added screw hole would be obvious, there is also a raised crease below the hole for strength.

Today at the Hillsboro all Ford Show, I saw another late 1969 Cougar with the apron, dated 08G. Several 1969 Mustangs in attendance, but the two with the 1970 style battery aprons, were much earlier cars, and had obviously been replaced.

my 69 did not have that form in the apron.

not sure if it's considered a late car though.

70 apron also has a hump stamped in it on rad support for 1 7'' headlite where 69 flat for 2 6'' headlites in different locations

Here ya go Jeff! I thought I'd finally get the picture I promised that I forgot about. Here is a shot of the inner fender of the 69 Boss. I was more interested in the B rather than the hole when I took this picture after I got the car home, so the picture is not that clear. The arrow is pointing to the hole in question. As you can see the original inner fender is solid and in no need of replacement.  Armond

Armond - could you post in the post above the cars VIN or when and where it was built to help with collection of data points?

Thanks
