Carter 3911s vs. 3909s fuel pumps
« on: May 14, 2012, 08:27:10 PM »
Today at the boneyard I spotted and grabbed a CARbureTER button top fuel pump with integral filter (crimped 65 style).  It was in an early 70s Ford pickup with a smallblock.  After getting it home and cleaning it up, I found it is a 3909s instead of the 3911s I was assuming it was.  Comparing it visually with another 3911s that I have, I can see no difference.  Since it was on a smallblock, I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that it can indeed be used with no issues on a 289.

I know the official application is a Ford pickup with either a 360 or 390.  The date code is August 1964.  Is anyone aware if there would be a market for this pump?  I'm not aware of a concours Ford truck hobby, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there is one.

Any insights that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

FE engine pumps have a different arm than small block pumps with an obvious different shape. The 3909 also had several FE car applications. Since this is an August 64 dated pump on an early 70's SBF pickup it's probably one of the early rebuilds where they paid little attention (from my observations) to what individual parts where going with what, i.e. a 3909 body with a 3911 arm. If it has the same arm as an original 3911 it should work fine. There is a number stamped in the underside of the pump arm, the (non-HiPo) SBF arm is stamped "177-220". The housings were pretty much the same so if the arm matches you should be OK.

If you could post a picture of the pump showing the arm we could tell in a second.

I think Dave hit the nail on the head.  There was a sticker on it that made me think of the Ford remanufactured decals that you see on rebuilt pumps, but it was so grease/oil soaked it was no longer discernable.  I compared them again, and the 3909 pump has the same arm as my other small block pumps, so I'm sure it is a rebuild.

As faint as the 3909s stamping is, I'm sure no one would ever be able to tell that is has the incorrect part number once it is installed on the engine.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance.
