RH Exhaust Manifold Heat Shield
« on: March 17, 2012, 05:47:37 PM »
The kit from AMK came with the threaded stud, a flat washer and a brass nut but no assembly instructions.  Does the flat washer go between the stud base and the manifold, between the stud and the heat shield or between the heat shield and the brass nut?

I am kind of surprised there was no lock washer or any way to retain the brass nut so that it doesn't vibrate loose.  At the temperature of the manifold, I don't think locktite will even provide much resistance.

As always, thank you in advance for the responses and the wealth of information here.

I've always used two brass nuts as a jamb nut pair.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know.

Dave, are the assembly drawings available somewhere for public use or is that a reference that you purchased?

John,
I purchased a Ford MPC (Master Parts Catalog). Got mine from the link provided. Very useful, use it often.

Useful - yes; accurate - 99pct; represents assemblyline parts - no. This is a service document so many parts unique to a specific year and specific model (and maybe plant) are not included, the replacement part is listed, and many times without the part number that is actually on the part. The hardware shown is also consolidated over the years to reduce the inventory requirements of a dealership. For example, for 65-66 Mustangs, the factory assembly drawing calls out for "fine" thread oval screws for trim but the service manual calls out for "coarse" threads. Ford changed from fine to coarse threads in 1967-68. However, it is very useful for engine and transmission work. My paper version is at least 25 years old and well worn.

Allot depends on what version you got. Remember that the text only reflects what Ford had available (at the time of printing) to work on the particular application not what was original that is why its best to find a printing (if you could) to when your car was built

Draggin' up an oldie but goodie.  My original stud was broken off when I bought the car ~1980 and I stuck a bolt in there at the time.  I have a spare engine that has the stud, with what appears to be an extra non-correct nut.

The AMK part NPD#9A603-2AK which is stated to be for 1965-1967 looks VERY different than the spare engine picture.  The built in "nut" is super deep, more than twice the one from the spare.  The spare one is about 3/16" deep.

The AMK part NPD#9A603-3AK looks much more like it, but is said to be for 1968-1969.

The stud that I removed from the spare has dimensions that line up with Ford part 377833, with a 5/16"-18 thread on both ends.

A very difficult place to get original pics, the engine almost has to be out.

Any suggestions?  Pictures in the attached document.

The correct stud is 379008-S8, AMK B-12619, for 64-67. and 382245-S8, AMK B-12620. for 68 and up. Go to the AMK website http://www.amkproducts.com/ and check them out.

Sorry AMK....I went down to Lowes tonight after work and got a couple 5/16-18 brass nuts for 1.28 each. I had an extra stud I took down there to be certain. They're both on the car, as I took the advice from midlife to double them up for a jam effect. I have lost more than a couple of those little buggers over the years from vibration. I'm happy. Glass of wine (or two) is next...
