Restored 66 C4 Transmission

OK now I've completed the C4 for my 66 Sprint Convertible. Copied all the original marks I found. The orange looks a little heavier/darker in the pic than it actually is.

I had wondered if the orange spray on mine denoted a 289 application.  Apparently not.

More really nice work.  Is the case and bellhousing natural or painted?


By the way, Dave, did you have enough nerve to do this?

Transmission case and bell housing not painted, just cleaned and detailed. Stacy you are much bolder than I. I've used the dining room table for many things(car part wise) but used the garage for the rebuild of the transmission.

I've gotten away with placing clean parts on the dining room table, but even I know that doing something like rebuilding a trans on it would be WAAAAYYY crossing the line!   :o :o

Ivy, What did your wife say when she came home and saw a disassembled C4 on her beautiful dining room table :o  LOL!

btw, I like how you kept the flowers on the table, give great ambiance while you work haha!

I would tell you that I used the kitchen table because I'm the king of the castle.

My wife would tell you that I did the rebuild while she was out of town, and if she had been there, there would have been a "spirited" discussion about it and I would have been working on it in the garage  ;) .

If you were reading my posts back when I did my C-4,  I actually got-away-with putting the bellhousing, main case, and tail cone through 5 trips in IN THE DISHWASHER!!!  (After degreasing several times with pressure spray of lacquer thinner and Castrol Super Clean)

I've rebuilt VW engines on my kitchen table years back, before me and the engines were banned to the outer world. I maintained that the engine was cleaned, degreased and cleaner than the carpet. Wrong statement.

My only mistake like this (ok, maybe not the only one...) was the time I needed to rebuild a clutch on a Case tractor.  The instructions required some 20 minutes of cure time at 350 degrees.  Sounded like cooking to me, so while my wife was out, the clutch went into the oven.  I went back to the garage and came in 20 minutes later to a pretty awful smell that permeated the whole house.  Windows all open for a couple of hours, then closed up and I thought all was back to normal.  Unfortunately my wife's olefactory is much more discerning than mine and she knew something was wrong when she got to the porch, even before the door was open.  My goose, along with the clutch, was thoroughly cooked.

What did you use to clean it?

To initially clean it I used mineral spirits rags and a old tooth brush as I was trying to preserve the markings. Once I had all the markings photographed and copied onto clear paper then I finished cleaning it with mineral spirits and steel wool. The main body/casting of the transmission was a fairly rough surface and was hard to get all the dirt off.  I ended up blasting with glass beads at a low pressure then slightly polishing with steel wool again. Any surface that was originally machined I polished those areas with Brasso and steel wool to try and get that freshly machined look.

I rebuilt the transmission, all new gaskets, clutch plates, etc., had all the original hardware and vacuum clips re-plated.  I made a new paper decal for the neutral switch wire from the original.

Very nice!  I have my C-4 apart and I'm cleaning it now.  You said you rebuilt the transmission.  Who's rebuild kit did you use?  Thanks...

Allen,
Purchased the parts online @ TransPartsOnline but didn't have the best experience with them. There's quite a few places out there to get the gaskets, seals, clutch plates, bands, etc.
