Mating 200 six to C4 transmission questions
« on: February 26, 2012, 02:56:01 PM »
So my project for the day is to drop my motor into the chassis. So I have a couple of questions.

1- In the attached pic which order does the ring go in relation to the crankshaft/ flexplate/ torque converter? I cant remember, didn't take pics of that on disassembly and can't find illustration in manual.

2- Does anyone put thread sealer on the bolts that hold the above assembly to the crankshaft. If I remember correctly, when I removed those on disassembly the engine oil drained out.

Thanks

i believe that ring only fits one way, bolt hole orientation, and goes under the bolts. i would use blue loctite and torque to spec.

Greg, Heres a pic of my flex plate still on the motor. So it crank, flex, ring, torque converter.

Dave - no engine plate between the trans and the engine on 6 cylinders?  Just asking - only had a couple and did look

Coloring on those plates. Natural on top and engine color on the bottom?

Would think that it was on the engine at the time the engine was painted like V8s (since the flex plate was installed) So we would see the upper and side edges with engine color and overspray increased to good coat (from outer to inner) in the starter location. Seen some with good coats of color out in the starter area- guess they relied on the bolts providing the ground on that one

My engine was blue but there was black paint on the bottom plate. Didn't find any blue paint where the starter mounted but was rusted pretty bad.

Don't think the inspection plates were installed at painting time (the engine) so like autos the semi-gloss black is pretty typical

I recently got my transmission rebuild and the trans shop painted my Torque Converter black without letting me know.  I did tell them to not paint the transmissions aluminum body, but instead they painted the converter.

They painted the converter after they rebuilt the converter.

What I would like to know what is the correct color for the Torque converter on a San Jose- Jan 11 1966 Mustang 200 C4.  I've heard either green or blue light paint.

Wow!  You revived a really old thread.  Probably should have started a new one.  I've pulled a couple of C4 transmissions from 64 1/2 (260 V8) through 66 (289 V8s) and all torque converters were not painted.  Natural bare metal finish, rusty in some cases.
