Convertibles usually had the black rubber cap on the dimmer switch.  There should be no plastic grommet in the carpet though.

According to MCA rules the grommet is not correct for any body style.

The plastic grommet was never used on factory carpet.

Can anyone explain the rationale behind putting the cap on convertibles but no other body style?
I've read lots of speculation but no definitive answer. Just curious...

So your foot willn't slip off the dimmer switch while driving in the rain with the top down and wanting the high beams on :D

Convertibles have inner rocker panels.  The dimmer switch is a little harder to reach than in a coupe/fastback.

So wait, what your saying is that unless you have a convertible, the dimmer switch should just be bare metal?  My coupe has one and has had one since I bought it.  Find it hard to believe a PO added it but I suppose it could be true. If I remember correctly the 65 I owned years ago had one as well ???

Yes, only convertibles were supposed to get the rubber dimmer switch cap.  I'm sure some coupes/fastbacks might have slipped through with one.  There is even a mention of it in Ford documentation somewhere, maybe the MPC or assembly manuals.

That makes sense to me, although I like Bob's explanation (below) better. Especially when driving barefoot at the beach. ;D

Ok then a carpet with the gromment around the dimmer switch hole is that a reproduction carpet.can it be removed to use the cap.

Bob gaines is serious with his answer as that is why the rubber boot is on converts. After having 2 verts with the boot on dimmer switch i looked up ford part # & says 76 convertibles use so i looked at switch location on floorboard & the inner convertible rail blocked your shoe from reaching over by kickpanel to find dimmer switch. It is harder to reach switch on 4-speeds because of clutch pedal in the way verses auto.

Sure, the grommet can be removed.  Hopefully the hole wasn't cut real big.
