Topic: 65-66 Steering Column Bracket

Is there supposed to be a rubber pad that goes between the steering column and the bracket that mounts under the dash? Not talking about the firewall but the bracket that snugs the steering column to the bottom of the dash.

yes. i have made a few out of old bicycle inner tubes.

There is also a paper spacer involved, going between the upper bracket and the dash. Give me a couple of hours and I'll scan my drawings and post them. It's too early in the AM to think, scratch and eat.

Pictures -
1. The paper insulator. For color see the 3rd and 4th picture.
2. The rubber insulator. It was held in place with contact cement. I used 3M8001 yellow weatherstrip adhesive.
3. Original material - LH top, 67 rubber, 67 paper and 67 paper intact; RH top, my repro rubber, my repro paper, orig San Jose Oct 65 build paper.
4. What's going on my 66 "K" car, San Jose Oct build. Note "pin" type locking nut.
All dimensions are based on 2 ea, 1965 (Sept, May), 4 ea 1966 (Oct, Dec, Jan, Feb) 1 ea 1967 (May), all San Jose cars.

You mean they all didn't have the finger/pin?  Seen plenty with it - guess I never paid much mind to the others

Don't think it was mentioned, but the top bracket with the paper piece is always semi-gloss black, not interior color.  The lower collar is obviously interior color.

There are two types of center lock "staked" lock nuts, ones with a round indent, the "pin", and others with a slot, both identified with the same part number, 55802-S, 5/16-18 hex nut, 1/2 hx, 17/64 in thk. Applications are: 64-67 steering column mount, -S8 ?, pin and slot; 67 bumper to end bracket, -S2 ?, slot; 64-66 (-67, 68 ?) vent window spring retaining, -S8 or -S7, pin. I believe it's because of mutiple suppliers.

Charles, you are correct again. I removed the clamp from my relatively untouched 66 "K" car (Oct 65 San Jose build) and it was black, not semi-gloss black but a very glossy black. The paper insulator was the same color as my pictures show. It occurred to me why I assumed the bracket was interior color and the answer was simple, the last four cars I worked on in that area had a black interior.

Thanks for the posts on this thread. I'm restoring mine. I did need to replace the Paper. But, I noticed the original rubber on my 66 San Jose car is 1-1/2" wide (A).
