« on: November 30, 2011, 06:48:33 PM »
Scott thanks. Take a look at the thread I started about FE Engine Decal ( acouple of weeks ago). Wondering if any of your 68 BB's still has one thats attached and readable?

Yes, there were single exhaust 1968 J-code Mustangs.  They were non-GT.

Was the tag on the driver or passenger side head?

My yellow KR is probably the best one to check.  It's got a bunch of exhaust stacked in front of it and it's on a car stacker, so I can't get to it.  Tim said he was going to help me move the stuff out of the way but I haven't seen him showing up to help....yet.

Since we're getting off thread (BB discussion on a J code thread) posted this over in the Assembly Line Discussions. Don't know the year since I don't recognize the engine code but its an example

If that pic is for mustang I believe the 400 series numbers were for shelby's or CJ's. Tim posted the numbers for them on my BB decal thread. Cant access that post while typing this. I know that 390's are 300 series numbers. Too bad that pic isn't in color. hard to make out alot because of shadows. What is intresting is like Tim said it was Just a number and a J. The "K" does not appear to be there. The tag is longer but we dont know if there is something we cant see because the forward end is curled up. The block in backround shows a full decal applied to head but its not readable.

Scott I fear the yellow shelby tag will be like this pic that jeff posted. Tim feels shelby's were a 3 digit number and a J. Do any of your CJ's (non shelby) have a engine decal on the passenge side head? The pic is of a 69 CJ so you see the L pefix. I've been told that the L stands fo the Lima engine assembly plant. Supposedly Lima didn't start building BB's until mid 69 production.

I agree with Jeff, maybe we should break this thread off the J code one to avoid confusion.
Rich, I think you are confused about my statement. About 98% of what I see are Shelbys so that is my data base however I do not think (99.9999999%) that there is any difference between the CJ put in a Mustang or a Shelby and therefore the engine codess are exactly the same. As far as this 68/69 thing, 407 J is only for 68 automatics and not for 69s so if it is 407 J it is a 68. IIRC the 69 auto code is 421?

Agreed on going back to the engine decal thread.

Another BB related post to be moved- I wanted to point out the engine sticker in your picture and the orientation it is applied. Check out my post on the assemblyline engine picture and how it differs from the picture of the restored engine in relation to the sticker. This one appears it was applied at a sharp angle. Bob

Bob the pic is of BP's unrestored low milage 69 CJ. That engine was a Lima Engine plant build according to the sticker prefix.

Tim mentioned that the pic Jeff posted is during 68 production. Hard to guess in Jeffs pic which plant it is though? I've heard that FE's were assembled at either Cleveland 1, Lima or possibly even River Rouge in 68. Although this is a great pic the sticker is dog eared at the forward end and if there was any plant code you cant see it.

What is evident from the pic is that the sticker shows no K prefix.  This corresponds with what Tim mentioned a few weeks ago and Pete Disher confirmed. On the Shelby's they've seen 405J, 407J or 408J. The sticker I bought from ESC has the following   C  K319J. I'm just trying to determine if mine should just read 319J. One other thing I see in the pic and have to question is, why does the sticker seem to be much longer than needed to fit only 4 characters. The engine in the backround (which seems to have the sticker installed better) looks to be much longer then it needs to be if there are no prefix characters.

I wouldn't want to cast doubts on the authenticity of the BP car tag and how it is oriented but just relating how I have observed  every partial or complete FE engine sticker or even the adhesive residue on a cylinder head. I have seen way more remnants of just the adhesive residue then stickers or partial stickers. As many as I have seen that straight oriented way and none at a slant other then your picture personally and assuming the integrity of your example my only conclusion is that there were at least two ways that they were typically applied and the slanted way was the less prevalent of the two ways being discussed. Of course what I have observed even though somewhat numerious is admittedly a small cross section relatively speaking. The assemblyline picture helps support my point of view. Bob
