Original 68 spare?
« on: November 26, 2011, 10:03:18 PM »
I'd like to post some pics of what i've been told is an original 68 spare. Trying to find out if these wheel weights and valve stem look original. The markings on the back of the rim look like something Ford would do. Date stamping is 8MB. Out of an S code San Jose car. Does anyone recognize these bits and pieces.

The weights I do not think are Ford and that the valve stem is not a dill. Marty

I have seen the Excel weights on other original wheels, so my opinion is they are original.

The original spare in my 3/69 built SJ car has Excel weights.

Yes on Excel weights. Paint mark is typical. date is Feb 68. I agree with Marty that cap is not original

Cap may not be original but is there any way to tell if the stem is original. Trying to determine if the tire has been ever pulled and swapped. The rim and tire are in exceptional condition for there age. If there was ever a swap the weights and stem would have been pulled and replaced. If weights are original than this looks to be a fairly untouched example.

Thanks for the correction on the weights. I was thinking that originals had a diamond symbol on them? Was there another brand used? Marty

Another reason for the inquire is that I asked a while ago if the spare should be a styled steel wheel or a plain black. I was surprised to learn here, on the site, that it should be a styled wheel matching the wheels at the 4 corners. My initial assumption would have been that it would be a plain steel rim for the spare. The tire mounted on this wheel corresponds with the size for a big block GT, F70-14 Firestone. If this one is original and untouched then it should stand to reason that a plain rim could have been standard equipment as well (maybe later in the model year or at least at San Jose). I have an example of a spare tire F70-14 Firstone matching this one in model and brand out of a J code Dearborn convertible with an argent 8MF styled wheel. The only mark I found on the back of that one was the tiny silver paint daub. That's why the broad brown marks on the plain wheel surprise. Marty look at the wheel weight on the styled wheel as I noticed an elongated diamond shape imprinted with an M and a H.
