Sept 1964 Dearborn Underside Paint
« on: November 22, 2011, 05:08:00 PM »
Got a question about the finish on the underside of a Sept 22, 1964 fastback. I was under it last night scraping old undercoating off of it and it looks like the bottom of the tunnel was painted with some sort of paint that is kind of similar to the exterior color. The car is color code 5 (Twilight Turquoise). There is signs of the original turquoise on the rear frame rails to. The car was built on Sept 22, 1964 in Dearborn.

What color should the underside be? I can't find any sign of the typical Red Oxide that most people seem to do the underside in when they don't undercoat them.

Have seen other examples like that around the time frame.  Would recommend that you do a thorough cleaning, take pictures, document what you find and then replicate it.

Very interested in what you find. Mine was built about a month later (October 29), and the bottom seemed to be black with LOTS of white overspray (car is, or was white).

Unfortunately I did not sufficiently document mine.

See a lot of Dearborn cars with black on the bottom, so probably what yours was.  The blue primer color is very uncommon and possibly only used for a week or 2 of production.

Thanks, Charles.

The car belongs to a friend of mine and he is restoring it for his wife.
