Front and rear bumperetts
« on: November 22, 2011, 09:30:59 AM »
I'm starting to notice that many restored cars have front and rear bumperettes. Remember reading here months ago that late in 68 production rear bumperetts became an option. Marti report does not make mention of this. Car did not have either front or rear at time of purchase in mid eighties. Prefer the clean look without but can add them if they should be there.

Rich buy your build date I would not expect to see them. If they were added as a option that would have been on your Marti report. Marty

My July NJ 68 only has front bumperetts.  MY 67 has both.  I'm kinda torn on which looks better.

Dave I think the 68 should have both front and back or none. Marty

Marty thanks. None on car at purchase and no mention of it on Marti report. I guess it will stay as is.

My dad bought the 68 in 1971 as the 2nd owner.  We have no reason to believe it's ever been changed.  I may be wrong......  However, there is no evidence that there were ever any mounting brackets.

Dave is your car a J or S code with duel exhaust?  What is the build date? I am not sure but possibly cars with factory duel exhaust may not have had the rear bumperets.  That or the front bumperetts were added on your car. Does any one else here know about this? Marty

No holes in rear valance so doesn't look like there were bumperetts. This is a later car die to side marker light. I have to double check some pics but I believe my old S code SJ fastback built in march or April  had them.

Marty, It's a J code 7/15/68 build date.  I found a picture of the 68 from it's former glory days ( ~ 1973) before dad painted it and changed the color.  I do not see any bumperetts on the front.  Looks like I'll be removing them.  And, I'll be calling dad to ask him yet one more question about the car.  It's easy to add the front ones because all the mounting holes are already there.  It's a different story to add them on the back.  So...it appears my 68 did not originally have any.  Dave

Front and rear bumperettes were standard equipment when production of the 68's started.  It became optional (like other changes) after the UAW Strike.  I talked to Kevin Marti some time ago and he said it would show up on the reports as an option.  Bumperettes were included with the Wheel Lip Mouldings and not a stand alone option; so if your Marti report show Wheel Lip Mouldings you should also have bumperettes.

Hope this helps.

Wow Dave what a great driveway full of Mustangs! I think you have come to the right conclusion.
Thanks Danny that is a helpful bit of information. I still would like to know for sure if it was a J or S code dual exhaust car and optioned with the bumperetts if it got them in the rear? Marty

Don't see why the rears would have anything to do with dual exhaust since all '67's had them and '68 Shelby's too.

Thanks Charles that is what I thought but I have seen a few cars like Dave's and wanted to be sure I was not missing something. This is one of the best places to learn from each other. Marty

Marty,
The 67 in front of the 68 was my mom's.  That picture was taken in about 1973.  In 1975 I bought my 67.  So, we had 3 Mustang convertibles in the family all as daily drivers.  Unfortunately, we never got a picture with all three together.  My mom sold her 67 about 25 years ago, but dad and I hung on to ours.  Dave
