Front Drum Backing Plate, Painted or Not?
« on: November 13, 2011, 01:54:21 AM »
I just finished stripping the 66 vert down as I am getting ready to take it to a shop for sheet metal replacement. I removed the backing plate from the front spindle but there was no paint between the gasket surfaces. After stripping did not find any paint on the backing plate. The question I have, is this common. Are most backing plates painted black? It has all the Ford stampings in the plate.

Thanks,
Dave

Every one I've ever seen had a good coat black on it. Not unusual to find no paint at the mounting surface since the paint can transfer surfaces after years of contact and chemicals

It was pretty clean between the spindle and backing plate that's why I ask. Other than that area they are heavy rusted inside and out.  I have them soaking in evaporust right now.

No markings on the first back plate, but found some on the spindle, and drag link. will post pics after getting everything cleaned up.
