Topic: Gas Tank Stencil

Does anyone have a photo of the ARMCO stencil that is sometimes seen on gas tanks.  ARMCO was apparently a supplier to Ford for the metal used to fabricate the tanks.

Never seen nor heard of anyone finding ARMCO on a gas tank out of a Mustang- seen and made a stencil for ARMCO for use on galvanized bolt on parts such as found on 69's but in 40 or so years never an ARMCO

All the tank stencils I've seen were USS, Wheeling Pittsburgh or Republic Steel

These are being sold on Ebay for a 68 mustang. haven't come across an original pic though.

Kind of odd - selling them for a 68 with a 69 date on them

Also the ARMCO section is unlike any original ARMCO emblem I've seen (fonts are different - emblem is different ....) . Hope we don't start seeing these at shows - going to be some unhappy people out there unless something surprising shows up to support them

Wonder what that gas tank (the one with used as a prop) came out of. Cute little 20 in a circle also

I've got a Tank I just pulled out of a 70 with the ARMCO Stencil on it, will post up a photo tomorrow(Monday) when I have some light on it. It is not like the photo posted above. It is on top of the Tank just forward of the Filler Hole.  Andrew

The majority of ones we're finding on 70's have been Wheeling Pittsburgh

Will be interesting to see. Also please provide what plant the car was built at and if the tank has a stenciled part number on it if you please

June of 1970 Dearborn Car. Non E/E Tank. I found one other stencil on the Rear RH Corner of top of Tank. Not very visible, it looks like a circle in the same color as the ARMCO Stencil.

What are your thoughts on the 'Spare Tire Support' ? Ever seen one?

Thanks - as mentioned never seen a Mustang tank with that name on it. As anticipated the font and emblem are different from what is being sold

The trunk.tire board?  Yes plenty of times (discussed elsewhere here. And since its a 70 Dearborn car you can see the number on it also

Do you happen to know what the 52 on it represents? Inspector's number, or such?

"Typical" the repro's are all the same info - but offer for different year !   IF like USS all that info would change with the run of steel.
There is no way that 1475 number would be the same from 68/69 to 1972.

Have not seen this on all years or plants but for 70 Dearborn I would think that the number is the second rotation number that would match the car. And if so then it suggests that not all Mustangs, not all cars built on that line received a trunk board that year or there were different sizes for different applications on that line. If not then there would be no reason to number them to a specific car

Im picking up this thread since I am working on a more accurate gas tank stencil right now.  From what I have seen myself on original gas tanks there is a USS and a Wheeling stamp I have here, and then we see the ARMCO stamp that was posted here a while ago by Andrew.  That one is more unusual in my opinion...never seen one in person.

Does anyone have an original USS stamp they can measure on a gas tank?  I would like to confirm the overall outside dimensions with what I have here.  Im measuring 4 5/8 x 7 3/4 on a 1970 gas tank with a 3/8 border.
