Underside Color for 1965 San Jose Mustang Fastback?
« on: November 11, 2011, 12:16:56 AM »
I apologize if this is a repeat question, but search in the database did not help me.  I have my Jan-Feb of 1965 San Jose Mustang Fastback in the bodyshop getting some much needed TLC.  What color should I have the underside painted? Primer rust or black?  I have not found much red so far.
thanks!

So your San Jose VIN is somewhere in the 172000-18500 range?

If so it could be one of the black floor pan cars.  Some of these were built earlier and later so they can still be in the VIN range but be finished differently. These cars would still typically have the red oxide epoxy primer/sealer from the firewall forward.

If you provide a VIN I may have an example real close to yours for confirmation

I too have the same question,  VIN#:  5R09K187323, Fastback San Jose car.

Would guess (based on your VIN that your car was likely a red oxide epoxy primer/sealer floor pan car. Since the colors vary from batch to batch we can sometimes see a difference from the application from firewall forward and from the firewall rearward. Typically the color in 65-66 is a muddy/brownish hue or tint to it

Hope this helps

Out of curiosity, have you cleaned the bottom of the car to see if there are signs of the original primer color(s)?  184819 had a black bottom with red-oxide under the front frame rails.

Great idea since were are guessing based on other cars not yours. Report back what you find.

Did look at #181780 & #187400 (65 San Jose) today  both red oxide

#181780  (65 San Jose) was Feb 4th

Will look at the other tomorrow - picture didn't come out clear (plus it was painted over)

The red coupe that got parted out was 04B and the bottom was black.  Oh well, typical inconsistencies!

Ours is 15B! The bottom of this car was stripped at some point and is now black and lightly undercoated!

Easy to explain since they we know that they weren't built in numerical order and we know the door dates can be off as much as 3 weeks.  SO its easy to see that cars with later projected build dates were built before others with earlier ones.

You really think you needed to tell me that?   ;D ;)

Uh ... Nope - just of others watching ;)

Checked the other car today and no door tag :( maybe the owner took it off before it came in for a paint job

Jeff,
Thank you for your help! Sorry for the slow reply, I have been on vacation.  My car does fall within that range and so far have only found black on the pans etc from the firewall back.  There appears to be some red on top of the black near the frame rails below the fender apron / firewall.
