68 FE engine Decal
« on: November 09, 2011, 08:46:51 PM »
Since I see that Scott F and Tim seems to be active today I hope I can get your insight and experience to answer this question. Posted it on the CJ forum figuring someone would have some knowledge to pass along but getting views with no responses. Here goes.

I'm posting this question here figuring someone has possibly seen an original unrestored 68 FE. Spoke with Bob Perkins a few weeks ago and we were going over the ECS decals I had with me. He looked at the engine block decal which was C1 K319J (denoting a 68 S code 390). He said he thought the C1 was wrong. We looked at his 3 69 Cj's and they all had an L prefix which stood for the Lima plant. I spoke with Dave over at ESC and he said Lima started building all the FE's in 69 but that was midyear 69. His documentation shows C1 for Cleveland 1 engine plant for FE's in 68. I spoke with Bob again and he concured that Lima was mid 69. Then he mentioned that possibly all FE's were assembled at River Rouge (dearborn assembly plant). He also said to check the metal engine tag but it doesn't have any info which seemed to point to an engine plant. The Dearborn assembly plant makes some sense since Fe's were cast at the Detroit Foundry thus the DIF casting on the blocks. So would Ford cast it in Detroit only to ship it to Cleveland for machining and assembly and then reship some to Dearborn and the rest to SJ or NJ? Question is has anyone seen an original unmolested car or seen assembly line pics with a paper tag on an FE with something other than a C1 prefix. Scott you have quite the collection so figured you may be able to verify this.

I don't have a 390 id tags but all the 68 428 ones I've seen begin with L. Doesn't really matter what assembly plant, the motors came from same

Hmmmm. I believe L stands for Lima, Ohio Engine Plant. That seems to correspond with what Bobs 69 CJ's all had. Daves research shows that FE's didn't go to Lima until later in 69. Tim do you have some pics of this? Scott anything you can veify here?

Emailed PD at coralsnakes and he said 428 PIs and CJ he's seen didn't have prefixes. Just number and J. Not even the K. Tim or Bob have you seen this as well on 68 BB Shelbys?

as I stated above, yes, but only on the KRs (CJ motors) The PIs had no prefix on either the auto or 4 spd engine tags and 350s didn't have them as they were on the valve covers which were removed.
