65 Carb Setup
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:57:56 PM »
Does anyone have a good detailed picture (driver side) of how the carb should be setup on a 10/1964 Ssn Jose A-code with an automatic transmission?  For some reason I don't have a dash pot, and it says I should have one...Any idea why I wouldn't have one...Also should the carb spacer be painted black to match the engine or left natural?  I've seen it both ways and nothing in the rules mentions in....I have the carb off now to get it rebuilt and thought now would be a good time to correct things if they are wrong...

The carb spacer was in place when the engine was painted.  The amount of engine paint that got on it might be a good coating to a dusting.  Most I have seen had a decent covering of paint.

Automatics should have a dash pot.  It's an easy item to get misplaced if the carb is ever removed for a rebuild.

Though from a 66 San Jose car (it was handy and easiest to find) hope this one will illustrate what Charles is describing - he can expand on the details ;)

Hope it helps

I think I have an electric choke...does that effect why the dash pot is not on the car at all?

In a word, no. The dashpot's function is to prevent the carb's primary butterflys from closing too fast causing the engine to stall, when your foot goes from the gas pedal to the brake.

This is from a Dearborn car but should be the same basic set up if not exactly the same

FWIW, the repro throttle rod I bought from NPD is not bent the same as an original (surprise!).  The double 90 is closer to the carb end by a good inch or more, which results in reduced return spring tension when installed correctly.  It works, but isn't right.

Thanks Jeff....That is the setup I have now but was reading about a bracket that is supposed to be attached to the center valve cover bolt?  Not sure what that is about...Also on the carburetor itself, I do not have those 4 goldish posts that are sticking out of the top...Are those required?  I am missing those for some reason....

Hi Chris,
The picture that Jeff posted is of my Aug 64 coupe. It is a 4V A code manual trans. The bracket that bolts to the valve cover is only on the auto trans cars. It's for the kick down spring.

Yes, those should be there.  Believe there are 2 for a 2 barrel carb and 4 for a 4 barrel.

Those "posts" are fuel vent tubes. I made mine from tubing that can be obtained from some hobby stores. They are brass tube stock, 0.219in OD, 0.012in thick wall, 12 inches long. Cut the tube stock into 1.35in long sections, and then cut a slot in the lower end, 0.030in wide, 0.375in long. A Dremmel tool with a saw blade will cut the slot. Lightly roll the upper end. If the end is rough, use 240-400 grit sandpaper. Do not grind.

We got lucky again (finding a picture) sorry the angle is not better

As for the vents - if you have a replacement carb the later ones have the vents case as part of the body rather than the separate brass ones

Thanks Jeff for the pic...Now I'm assuming the bracket goes on the center valve cover bolt....So does the bracket go under the j-clip or is there not a j-clip on that one bolt? Sorry for all the questions just want to get this right...
