Topic: Original Shocks, 66 Convertible

Was wondering which brand of shocks were used on a 66 Dearborn car. The ones I took off were stamped "Monroe" with load ratings stamped in them. The front shocks were stamped "C3F8" and the rears were stamped "C5A9". A few questions...could these be the original shocks? If so, what color were they originally? Were there any markings, stickers, logos, paint daubs, etc? Not sure if I should replace them or repaint and restore these. They seem to be ok, no leaks etc.

Don't believe Monroe was an OEM supplier back then.  Not even sure if they were making shocks in the 60's?

At least one OEM brand I know of is Gabriel.  These have a 'G' insignia stamped into the side.

OEM shocks for 65-66 should have a Ford engineering number and a date stamp.  Something like C4ZF...  5AB.

Original color of 65-66 mustang front/rear shocks was semi-gloss black.

I thought the same thing but the C3F8 and C5A9 stampings in them are what threw me (they kind of resemble a Ford part number prefix). Maybe it is common for an aftermarket supplier to use part numbers resembling Ford numbers. Any idea what a good replacement would be to closely resemble an OEM?

Most likely is just a coincidence that the numbers start with C3 and C5. 

Not sure what a good replacement is.  Probably be ok with most any of them, just paint black.  Of course, if you show the car, will need to fill/putty in any non-OEM markings that might stand out.
