65 SJ Drive Shaft Markings
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:57:48 PM »
My SJ Nov 64 built C Code fastback has an original white stripe on the driveshaft near the differential side. There was one other stripe that I cannot determine the color. I do not have the build sheet. Any ideas?

The buildsheets in the early years do no include any color coding.

The amount of information on early drivelines is difficult to get because we lack that source and we have to rely on original examples of which there are few and we can't IMHO trust the restored ones ;)

What trans does your car have?

Jeff:

The car has an auto trans.

Thanks

Thanks for the update. As mentioned not allot in nice original examples out there and there (best explanation IMHO for what we're finding) running changes since we find different colors on similar cars through out the production year.

And then of course you have owners swapping and changing drivelines over the years - as well as reversing the direction when they replace U joints.

Looking at the current 65 examples I have I have very little to offer, as the either have very different colors or (in one case) a single white

I did find one (unmarked if its a manual or automatic) with a pink (in the approx location of your missing color) and white that may be what your looking for

Sorry can't offer anything more concrete - but tried :(

Sorry I can't be of more assistance - maybe someone else has an example to share.

My 9/65 scheduled build San Jose A-code 4-speed car has this driveshaft, which I believe to be original to the car.  The catch is that the overall length of this driveshaft matches the dimension listed in the MPC as being for an automatic car....???  Oh well, it's never easy!  And yes, someone reversed the front/rear when replacing the joints so the stripes should be at the rear, not the front as shown.

Hmmm...I may well be wrong, but I thought it was quite difficult (but not impossible) to reverse a driveshaft.

In allot of the applications the dimensions are the same at the front and the rear of the drivelines. I've reversed a number of times and we've seen this produce the 40-55 vibration that is a somewhat common complaint for these cars

Jim, just out of curiosity,  did you find any other markings on your driveshaft? I have a Metuchen built 4 spd car with a scheduled date of 10/65. I found the same Lavender (Pink?), and Green stripes on mine.

Green paint daub on one end inside the yoke, yellow stenciled sequence of numbers (assumed to be tube mfg. ID), but no other stripes.

I also have the green daub. Do you have a photo of the stencilled numbers?

Thanks

Jim:

Thanks for the photo. What location is this on the drive shaft so I can inspect mine closer to see if it was once there.

Thanks Jim! Great photo! Mine also had the tube markings. If it's any help Garth, mine were located about mid way down the tube.

Garth

Note that this should be from the front of the shaft, not the rear as shown (joints had been reversed)

These are off my wive's 65 vert built Sept 64 in SJ. Has anyone seen the "4N" before?
The stripes are white (closest to end) and purple/lilac.
Is this correct for a C code with C4 and 2.8 gears?
Is there a reference chart anywhere?

Thanks.
