64 1/2 Dearborn Undercarriage Color
« on: September 25, 2011, 12:16:10 PM »
What paint color is the undercarriage for a Mustang assembled in June of 1964 at Dearborn.
I think it is Red Oxide but would like to make sure.  If someone has a brand name and product number of the correct color I would certainly appreciate it.

A number of cars that I have observed around this production time were black (fairly glossy, too) on the underside with the usual body color overspray, etc.

Can confirm what Brant is reporting for that plant and time period

Smooth and slightly shinny like the red oxides used. Not sure of what is available in your area or best to use since I've not needed to shot one lioke it

FINALLY getting ready to paint the undercarriage.  Plan on using DP90 black but should I adjust to create a gloss, semi-gloss or egg shell finish?

Your going for a smooth fairly glossy finish. Think right out of the can would be fine since the gloss level for the DP 74 is good the way it comes out.

You would be better on spraying dp90 and then getting a quart of ss urethane flatten to semi gloss and over reduce and spray you can get that get those factory bubble drips like a champ when you do this

Haven't seen floors that what I would call semi-gloss - closer to gloss IMHO

I would  start with the DP90 and see how it turns out.  I had my car painted with DP90 when it was blasted and it seemed way to flat to be correct but I dont know if they reduced it or not.  I know it was a thin coat.    Like Jeff says I also used DP74 on my floors and that had the right gloss but I still wish i had painted with a urethane as the DP74 doesn't seem to clean very easy.  I've also read that DP is not sunlight resistance but i doubt that would be a problem with the underside of the car.
