Red P decal
« on: September 14, 2011, 04:23:04 AM »
A few weeks ago i've seen a 65 mustang with a red P decal in the engine bay (on the fender on the passengers side). Unfortunately i don't remember the assembly line nor the VIN (but could check it this weekend).
The decal looked like this one:

I've already read that it is either a PAINT OK decal or an overall inspection mark. What is right and when or on what cars was this decal used?
I don't remember it exactly but i think the car i looked at was unrestored or thoroughbred. At least very original.

Typical of Dearborn to use those on the firewall/cowl.

I have seen original P decals in black, but not in red.  Has anyone seen an original decal in red on a 65/66 car?

Thanks Charles, this helps a lot!
Have you seen this decal in other positions or only on the firewall/cowl area?
This weekend I'll talk to the owner, perhaps i can bring up more infos about the car then.

Thanks again!

Only seen it on the cowl for 65-66 Dearborn.  If you buy the replacement ones, they probably should be trimmed down a little.

Here's some from two of Bob Perkin's super low mile original cars..

*Also, Charles mentioned cutting down the repros...I have noticed that the originals are always square, but the repros have rounded ends..which I have never seen on an original car ever.. Note original location of the "P".  This is where it is usually found on a Dearborn car, but in reality, It could have been found anywhere on the top cowl..

Almost forgot to mention, These are both 1966 Dearborn cars.  The first a black '66 hardtop (56 original miles- Literally, a new car time capsule), the 2nd, a Black '66 Fastback (Not sure of the orignal miles, but they are super low also).

HAve examples on Dearborn cars of red and black "P"s up into 70 (later ones with the inspectors names printed/stamped on than. Typical on cars after the ink stamps were done away with at that plant for some reason

Jeff, So, though one should never "assume" anything in the mustang universe.  Are we to assume the Paper, The "P" stands for "Paint-OK", The "F" stands for "Final-OK", and I think that there was an "N", and "K", also right?   I have no idea what those stand for!

-So a car with these paper decals should not have paint or ink stamps is what you are saying..Makes sense...Never really thought about that before..

Great pictures, thanks!
I will check whether the P stamp is a repro. I'm quite excited to find it out ;)

@Tony: I think the other letters were F B T, weren't they?
I read on VMF that it shall mean: F - Final ; B - Body ; T - Trim.
Is this right?

There were many different "letter" stickers if you include all the years - always got to be careful ;)

Pretty much just dealing with '65/'66 above Jeff..

Noone has asked the question, Was the Red "P" used after '66 ???

All I've ever seen after '66 are Black ones..

Yes have examples of the use of red "P"s through 1969 Dearborn and other non Mustang plants.  Example - in 69 you will typically see them (on Mustangs) in the drivers side door jamb - a pillar - near or slightly under the  weatherstrip
