Questions about 1966 Emberglo
« on: September 11, 2011, 08:42:09 AM »
I was at a car show yesterday, and was talking to one of the members of the local AACA who owns a grand national winner AACA 1966 Mustang coupe that is also an original emberglo (paint code V) like mine. He was telling me that back in 1966, the emberglo was a special paint option that the buyer had to pay extra for because of the metal flake in it and the difficulty with the paint job. He was also telling that only 10% of the 1966 Mustangs were painted Emberglo, and that there are only about 600 of these cars left in the world. If this is true then I have a truly unique car, combined with the fact that it is a true Sprint edition car as well.  :D

I was just wondering if anyone else knew about the additional cost for the emberglo paint from the factory or the rarity of the cars

Haven't heard about the extra cost for the paint.  It's a pretty common color, but there are other sources that show the percentage at around 6% of production.  6% of 600,000 cars is 36,000.  If it were 10%, it would be 60,000 cars.  I wouldn't consider that limited production.

Would be interesting to see documentation regarding extra cost for the paint.  I bet it was tough for them to match the panels, just like all the other metallic paints.  I know that whenever I have seen an original paint emberglow car, the paint is usually dried out on the top surfaces.  From what I understand, the size and type of metallic added to the paint back then would hold heat longer and the surface would get hotter.

Hey Terry,

There are no real records to go by, but Jim Smart gives some statistical probabilities based upon his random sampling of vehicles in his book, Mustang Production Guide.

Emberglo is 5.6% of production. For comparison, Candyapple Red (the most common color) is 13.8% and Sahara Beige (the least common) is 1.9%. My Tahoe Turquoise is 5.5%

Never seen an additional change for a standard (even metal flake one) paint on any original window stickers in 66.

Always lots of stories and claims out there but often not allot of documentation ;)
