If the car is a GT the argent SS wheels will not be listed with the options because the wheels are part of the GT option. I think the chrome SS wheels would have been listed because they were a up grade to the GT option.

Exactly!

Did yours come from the factory that way?
Scott,
Speaking of factory, what's the status of your facility? Aftershocks are in 250 a day range. Sleeping must be a pain.

For what it's worth,  my 68 Sprint B has the styled wheel spare in the trunk although the tire had been changed.

Nice trunk mat.
If you would not mind could you get a picture of the jacking instruction decal?

Here are the two decals on the underside of the rear trunk and one picture to show their locations. They are the jacking instructions and a Ford certification decal.

Thanks for the pictures.
Either your car did not come originally with a SS spare or the jacking instructions were changed and are wrong. On a SS spare there was a unique hold down washer used and the jack handle was under the spare.

So how can we verify what my car had of at all and what do you recommend? Change the spare tire that is remove the trim ring and get ther proper hold down as well as change the decal or change the spare tire wheel to match the current decal? I know my car had received a new coat of paint on the body,  I'll have to look and see if I can tell if the underside of the trunk hood was painted too.

So I think I have the answer. I looked at the spare tire and under the jack handle is the washer. Looks like the handle was put in the wrong place. Also when I look at the paint on the underside of the hood, it appears to be resprayed. The outer edge of the hood show wear as compared to the main portion which appears brand new. Also looking in one of the openings you can see rust  developing and then a pretty distinct line where the paint must have covered over the metal. So I think I need to get a new decal. What say you all?

I think a new decal would be the best solution. My reason of asking about the decal was that I would like to see a original jacking instructions for the styled steel wheel. When you take off the incorrect decal it will interesting to see if it was a original or a replacement. If it is original I would bet the dealer may have added the SS spare an not bothered to change the jacking instructions. It does appear that you have the correct hold down washer.

I'll be sure to let you know.  I can see some different coloration on the left side of the decal like it was placed in a slightly different position after repainting so I'm thinking it may be a replacement.  We'll see. Thank you all for the help.

I removed the non styled wheel jacking instructions from the underside of the trunk and cleaned off the area.  It appears the decal was installed after the trunk was painted as there are no outlines or coloration change under ther decal.  So I'm guessing the wrong one was put on after the trunk was painted. Is there a date code on the trunk somewhere to verify that the trunk is original to the car?

Even though it would appear that Ford intended to use the hold down plate on cars with GT spares, from my experience it was very seldom used.  I will check my 68 GT Mustangs but I don't believe the sticker showing the plate is on any of them.  Maybe my Sprint B.  The hold down plate was used in many of the Sprint cars for some reason.  That's where you find them most of the time.  I also saw one in an unrestored Gold Nugget Special Mustang.

Chrome GT wheels are a fairly rare option.  They would show up as an option on the Marti report.  Did yours come from the factory that way?

Scott

My car did not come with chrome styled steel wheels originally. My 68 1/2 Cobra Jet Torino GT did come with them and they are called out on the Marti report.
