Spare tire rim with Styled Steel Wheels
« on: September 06, 2011, 07:54:54 PM »
My 68 GT came with the argent styled steel wheels. Had one as the spare when I got it but is it correct? Should it be a plain steel wheel or the styled type? Getting ready to refinish them so may as do it once.

1968 GT cars got the styled steel wheel as a spare.  If the car had the styled steel wheels as an option (non-GT), then it got a steel wheel in the trunk.

1968 GT spare wheel in trunk

For the 1968 GT chrome style steel wheels, does the spare wheel in the trunk get the chrome trim ring, or is just the wheel used?

Typically just the wheel, no trim ring or center cap.

No trim ring on it. The styled steel wheel used a special cupped hold down washer and a wing nut unlike the standard spare that uses the lug wrench to hold down the spare.

My car came to me with 5 chrome wheels, so I was not sure weather the spare was mounted as a chrome wheel or just argent. Thank you all for the info.

1968 Chrome styled steel spare wheel?
« Reply #8 on: August 03, 2019, 11:31:08 PM »
Should the spare wheel on a 68 GT that has chrome styled steel wheels be chrome or painted argent?  I read somewhere that it should be argent but when I was judged in concourse trailered, I lost points for having an argent wheel.  Can this be clarified so I don't lose points in Virginia?  I will put a chrome wheel in the car if that is the consensus. I think it would look better in the trunk anyway. Thanks for any input.

The spare should match what is on your car or be the standard black rim. Be sure you jacking instructions match what you decide to do for a spare. The spare, jack and wrench need to be mounted per the instructions. Also 68 styled steel wheels use a unique hold down washer.
See you at the show.

Thank you. Sorry to administrator for putting thread in the wrong area.

No problem. Understand that in an effort to keep things organized we have provided many different sections where a subject might fit. As a guideline for me - When a subject covers/can relate more than a single identified group (65-66,  67-68 ....) then it goes int he general area (Driveline, Interior .....) If it only relates to a specific year then it goes in the year specific area of the site.

Something related to non-factory, modifications or non-restoration related topics go to the Lounge

Thread take a turn to a new subject (Multi subject threads don't tend to work too well here) we split and start a new one using a few posts from the original thread.

Chrome GT wheels are a fairly rare option.  They would show up as an option on the Marti report.  Did yours come from the factory that way?

+1 Normally at the bottom of the list

If argent then the Marti report will look similar to the one below

If the car is a GT the argent SS wheels will not be listed with the options because the wheels are part of the GT option. I think the chrome SS wheels would have been listed because they were a up grade to the GT option.
