November built 65 Fastback Trap Door
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:40:25 AM »
I bought a new bolt package from NPD for my Nov built 65 Fastback trap door hinges. They are all over sized, does anyone know where I can locate the correct sized bolts that attach the hinge to the door?

Do you have the original screws to have redone or looking to see what they look like?

The bolt I have is a 7/16 head and is really short.  I have enclosed some pics.  The top of the bolt head has a R with a circle around it.  I'm pretty sure they are correct but hopefully someone will chime in and say otherwise.

Unfortunately not an area that often gets pictures taken of it.

Believe you will find the bolts shown above to be the ones that were used to attach the trap door lift latch (or what ever you want to call it) to the trap door

None of the finishes in this picture are correct nor is the resolution but hopefully you can make out the washer design from the side shot at the top of the picture and the head to wash dia ratio from the bottom shot

Thanks Jeff for confirming the bolts that I have are correct for the door handle thing....Wood the bolts that actually hold the hinge on are really small...

I only have 2 of the original 4 screws, pictures below. Nothing appears to be stamped on the head of the bolt. My car is date code 29K, Deaborn built.

I took a picture next to the prop rod bolt for size comparison.

Thanks for the help. The 4 bolts that I am looking for are for the hinge, not the door prop (2 hinges x 2 bolts). The trap door is original and as mentioned the AMK bolt kit for a 65/66 Trap Door does not work. Bolts are over sized. I have one original and in appearance is the same as the AMK, but the size is different.

I'll order some more, maybe there was a packaging issue or other. Seems odd that they would not fit unless there was a early/late change to the bolt diameter.

My 66 trap door hinges had loose "capture nuts" inside the frame; iis it possible to slide those nuts out and replace them with the proper size?

The pics I put above are of the hinge bolts (the dark bolt). I put it next to the prop rod in the second picture for scale. .118" across the threads, .136 across the flats.

Should be able to replace them.  Need the nut setting tool to put a replacement in... looks like a rivet gun.  Might be possible to tighten yours with the tool though.

These were added after the car was painted.  Most restored cars miss that detail...
