Does anyone watch Muscle Car on Spike TV?  I noticed today (repeat episode) that they removed the VIN off their project Limelite Camaro when repairing the rust on the dash...I thought you couldn't remove the VIN tag?

i saw that too. they plan to put it back but dunno about the correct rivets.

Lots of different opinions on how legal that is - really surprised they would choose to show it

I feel that if a guy is restoring his own car and is the titled owner to the car he has a right to do whatever he wants to it. The laws on VIN tags are set up to prevent fraud, not the guy trying to restore his car. On the other hand I strongly oppose people that re-body cars or buy those CHINESE re pop bodies and use the VIN from the original vehicle. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to control this because it's very easy to do and is virtually undetectable once the car is all together.

It depends - but in many cases things can often be uncovered if your willing to make the effort

In the state of ohio is perfectly legal to cut a vin off of another car and put it on a different car, thats according to the state highway patrol and local authority's as its considered a restoration project.  I am involved in a similar case as stated above  and they can't charge the guy with anything because the car is or was being restored.

I would like this to be the case but since the issue is overseen by the Feds that is not always the case.  Spent a fair amount of time on the phone with a Secret Service Agent last month concerning removing and replacing VINs. I didn't call them

The reason I mentioned it can be a very gray area
