Recommendation for a Restorer in San Diego CA
« on: July 30, 2011, 12:14:18 PM »
Can anyone provide leads to a restorer in the San Diego area that can get the undercarriage and paint  done to a councours level?  The car is a Dearborn built R code 69 Mach 1. Wimbledon white and red interior.

I am looking for someone with the knowledge and desire to get all the seam sealers undercoatings and colors correct.

Don't believe you will find someone in San Diego with all the knowledge you will need but that is ok (Exposure to many original untouched Dearborn cars) . Just look for someone that will take direction and input while doing your project. There are allot of body shops out there but not allot or shops that want to get dirt cleaning your undercarriage, disassembling and doing all the steps required. So don't take their word for it, ask for references from other owners that have had the SAME jobs preformed at that shop recently and talk to them.

On top of that is the area a water based or base coat/clear coat region?  Since its near impossible to get the right amount of overspray with the LPHV guns or real looking overspray at all with the water based junk.

Then for a concours level job most shops have gotten lazy IMHO or focused on the glossy prefect paint jobs where they skim coat the whole body, cut all the openings and then just build on the clears. This whole process produces perfectly smooth and flat bodies, all color sanded and buffed out as well as edges that look twice as thick as original. All producing a dipped in plastic look. Fine for the Autorama or World of Wheels shows but not IMHO for concours

BTW its sound deadener  not undercoating ;) Under coating is what the dealer did - sound deadener is what the assembly plant did.

Depending on exactly what you wanted done and how much time/money you want to put in you probably need to find someone outside the San Diego area to do it correct.  Most of the guys doing concourse restorations on these Mustangs are in the middle of the country or on the east coast with some exceptions.  I would think you really need to remove the entire drivetrain to do it right.  You could always bring it out here to Scottsdale.....

I would check out Jack Brooks of www.deadnutson.com.  I have seen a Boss429 he did and it looks great.  He is north of you, but could be worth the drive.

Not opposed to sending the car away for quality work.

The drivetrain is currently out of the car and the engine has been rebuilt. Still needs detailing.

I would like to send the shell out for complete restoration and painting then do all the individual system restoration and reinstallation myself.

I'll probably end up making a rotisserie and cleaning and documenting my findings.  Then figure out the next steps.

I'll be away from my computer for all of next week, so no more replies from me for a while

With the distance (since you can't be there often to babysit) your going to need someone that will not need allot of hand holding. When you get back pm or email me and I'll give you a guy, not close but not as far as others that would be able to handle a 69 Dearborn car IMHO
