Engine brackets and pulley color
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:10:03 PM »
Yes I know they are supposed to be black but I keep looking at the PS bracket, alternator/smog pump bracket, adjuster arms for the alt and smog pump, water pump pulley and crank pulley thinking they are awfully shiney. Almost gloss black. They are dipped with runs so correct in that respect but shiney. The PS pump and smog pulleys are definately SG. I'm sure each could be a slighly different level of SG as they were done at possibly different times and places but is gloss black just wrong?

My personall opinion is that dipped parts have a higher level of sheen than spray painted parts using the same paint. I believe this is because the paint is thinner for dipping. Use SGB, dip the parts, and don't worry about the sheen!!

Pete I believe I have some NOS and original pulleys that were sprayed - something else to discuss and search out ;)

Jeff did all get made at one plant or was this sub-contracted out?

I think we could make a case that they were made and painted by different sub companies since the markings vary (some stamped into metal and some ink stamped identification)

So if multiple suppliersmis it safe to believe that multiple gloss/ semigloss levels for pulleys and brackets could exist on one engine? All identicle would seem to be highly unlikely. That could explain the sprayed versus dipped theory.

Bob thanks. Between the 4 pulleys (PS, WP, Smog and crank) 2 different gloss levels. For the 4 brackets (PS, Alt adjuster, Smog/Alt and Smog adjuster) all the same but a glossier level than the pulleys. Hope that will look OK.
