'69-70 Tag Light Not Reproduced? Is it that unique?
« on: July 09, 2011, 05:26:16 PM »
I realized recently that I'm missing the tag light for my '69 Mach 1.  I looked at several vendor's catalogs, and I saw reproduction lights for '65-68 cars, and '71-73s, but nothing for '69-70 Mustangs.  A friend stopped by with his '69 Mach, and after looking at his original tag light, it doesn't look noticeably different from what I remember seeing on '65-66 Mustangs.  Is the '69-70 light really that unique, and if so, why?

Thanks!

The shape of the bracket and length of the standoff of the arms is different between 65/66 and 67-70 . The difference is very evident if placed side by side. Bob

The good thing is that it's pretty hard to see once it's tucked up inside the bumper and with the gas barrier strip installed (sorry, don't know the correct term for it, a long fibre mat strip that runs above the lamp). This way having to go with a used one it doesn't have to be refurbished to quite the same degree as other parts.

Since they are below the gas shield they are just as visible IMHO as early cars without the shield ;)  In judging you can see the same amount as other years  - just a consideration

Ford called that part a "rear license plate lamp shield".  It's produced using masticated rubber from recycled tires.

Scott, most company's handle the cheesy inner tube material looking variety, do you know anywhere besides the junkyard one might find for their car a correct looking reproduction using the fibrous looking masticated rubber for that shield? hint hint nudge nudge  ;D. Bob

Bob just outed me!  With a nudge and some help from Jeff I learned a little about the shields through my research to reproduce them using the original material.  You can find them (67-68 and 69-70 versions) on my "Muscle Car Research" web site; link in my sig below.

And they are VERY close to the originals.

Another good reproduction - see it can be done ;)

Please clue me in privately if you've found any differences, Jeff.  I'll have a chance to make corrections if/when I need to have another batch made.

Scott - sorry I didn't mention you as a source for the shield! The original post was about the light so I hesitated to go into detail about the rest. It's excellent that you're making a correct repro of these as they've been unavailable for so long.

No worries.  I hesitated to mention it, too, for the same reason.

Knew you would respond in that fashion. Moment of light heartiness as they only differ in that they don't have the cracks and folds in them that the old originals do normally do ;)
