Topic: C-4 Kickdown return spring and bracket

I have looked for the answer in Mr. Mannel's book.  Can't find it.
This is a 1965 C-4.
Should my 66 have that bracket on the lower right bolt, and the associated spring that pulls the kickdown arm back to the rear?
I THINK the kickdown stuff was changed for 66 and the spring/bracket was eliminated.

I have never seen the lower bracket on the transmission that's shown used on a 1965 V8 Mustang. The kick down setup on a 1965 is different than a 1966 so are a number of other kick down components for the two years.

That was an original untouched transmission out of a 1/65 San Jose 6 cylinder.

My question still is unanswered though.

That bracket and spring seem so logical and appropriate for my car
but the kickdown functions well and returns as it's suppose to, without
that spring installed.

I cannot tell by physical evidence, if there ever was one installed.

Is it SUPPOSE to be on my car?

I stand by my statement that a 1965 (V8) equipped Mustang had no need for that bracket. The 1966 V8 and 6 cylinder equipped Mustang used the lower bracket as pictured. The bracket was bent a different way and did use a return spring.

I don't care about 65's.  I had one 20 years ago and I am aware that it had a TOTALLY DIFFERENT kickdown system.

I want it to be confirmed, for absolute sure, preferably by a picture of an un-restored 66 V-8 car, that MY 66 C-Code car came with the spring and bracket.

In the picture you posted you don't say if the transmission was used with a 6 cylinder or V8 Mustang. If you can get your hands on a 1966 Ford shop manual page 7-27 shows a diagram of the linkage for the 6 cylinder. The return spring is shown in that picture.

That picture is of a transmission out of Charles Turner car that he indicates in Reply #2, above, is an untouched 1/65 San Jose 6-Cylinder car.

In my Reply #5, above, and in my signature below, I state that MY CAR is a March 1966, Metuchen, NJ, C-Code, V-8.  IT HAS THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION IN IT

The 1966 Ford Parts and Accessories Catalog January 1966 lists Spring-Transmission Kickdown Control Lever Retracting F= Mustang (8 cyl. 260,289) part # C5ZZ 7B146B 17 1/2 COILS-6.26" free length-.550" OD Page 294. I hope this helps.

I got an OEM one coming from a friend nearby who has a lot of NOS stuff.

I'm gonna put it on.  It will work fine.  If I get dinged for a deduction, I'll remove it.

I'm a MCA Gold Car Judge. You shouldn't get dinged for having the return spring and bracket.  I deduct  a point if you don't have it.
