Finally went out and removed the chrome air cleaner on the car and I searched all over it, the snorkel and the base and could not find any date codes or dates anywhere on this item. Just thought I should add that here since a previous respondent indicated that there should be a date code on either the base or the underside of the snorkel. So...should I just sand this one down and repaint it or keep looking for a decent original used one to repaint? Let me know your thoughts anyone.

I don't know what to tell you. I know my Sprint air cleaner had a date code on the underside of the base of 6C

My car has a June 1966 build date code. If it originally came without a snorkel how do those breath? I just want it to be original...what should I do? I believe that someone here suggested that the air cleaner without snorkel came late in 1966 and were used exclusivly on the 1967 six cylinders.

Here's a picture of my May 66 Sprint Air Cleaner from the bottom. Date stamped "6E" (May 1966). No snorkel. There is a gap all the way around between the bottom plate and the chrome top that air is drawn through to the carb.

My air cleaner has no snorkel and the stamp location is identical to Dave's.
In the center where the base sits on the carb, there's a rubber gasket that fits down in the groove in the base. Only mention this because Dave's seems to be missing in his picture. And then there's a plastic fitting that sits on the carb before the air cleaner bolts onto it.

Not to hijack the thread too much but question for Pete. I have the rubber gasket but do not have the plastic fitting. Do you have a picture? For jgidley12 I think as far as what you should do depends on what level you are trying to get your car too. Seems the air cleaner you have could easily be cleaned and painted. If later you are trying to get more correct with dated one you would a least have a freshly painted one that presented well while you are looking.

I just want my car to be correct. My air cleaner is obviously correct for the fit although I do not think it is correct for  the fact that it has been chromed. But why does it not have a date code on it anywhere!!!!!
Should I just sandblast this air cleaner and paint it the correct Ford Dark Blue or should I look for an air cleaner that does not have the snorkel to be correct for a June 1966 Dearborn mustang? What are ;your thoughts please. Johnnie

My '66 Dearborn built Sprint has a scheduled build date of July 7, 1966. The chrome air cleaner does not have a snorkel.

Johnnie,

Since you're asking this question on a Concours Forum, and prefacing it with a statement like "I just want my car to be correct.", I'd venture to say that the issue was important enough to you to try to find a period correct air cleaner. That being said, the issue of whether a correct air cleaner for your car should have a snorkel or not is a little more difficult to answer. Based upon the limited amount of Sprint owners that participate on this forum and the date of your car, an air cleaner without a snorkel is the probable choice. But Ford in those years rarely did anything in a cut and dry manner, and there are allot of Sprints and 6-cylinders unaccounted for if we merely poll the participants here. We may find that snorkels were used in some instances.
I think Dave's suggestion is probably a good one: Paint the air cleaner you have, and keep your eyes out for  a dated base. Or you may attempt to reproduce the stamp in the base, and just keep the whole thing. Sorry if this is a vague response, but there's no way to advise you differently without researching the thousands of 6-cylinder cars built in '66. Keep what you have and begin noting what you see a car shows. Talk to Tony Kovar who runs the Sprint registry. He may provide a little deeper understanding from his personal forensic experience. I think it was his comment about the late model year change over that you're referring to. Just be prepared that there may never be a hard fast rule....

Interesting, I've never seen one of those Plastic fittings.  I've always seen the rubber gaskets that are normally there.  I wonder if that may have been sporatically Plant Specific...Again, Interesting.

The snorkel on the I-6 air cleaners were dropped in Early 1966 in favor of the cheaper non-snorkel type. It looks like the snorkel was dropped somewhere around April to May 1966. Never seen an original snorkel air cleaner on a post May '66 car..

If there was no snorkel, how did the air get into the carb?

Sorry for the seemingly dumb question, but without good pics of the entire assembly, I'm somewhat at a loss here, fellas...
