Prime tool
« on: April 09, 2025, 07:31:44 AM »
What tool do you use to prime a 428 cj part number and brand?. I went to Summit and they can't seen to find the correct one. The hole opening for a Cj intake ( distributor) is like 1.995. Every tool summit gave me was like 1.325 . The 1.325 is the aluminum cap that centers the shaft in the hole in the intake. Way to small. Does any one have a part number and brand for the correct size tool to prime my motor with. Thanks again.

The centering tool isn't required really. A set of good shoulders is adequate. I have never used any professional-quality tool for doing this on any engine (hundreds) I have built or replaced an oil pump on in over 50-years.

A junk distributer shaft has worked just fine for me.

Like ruppstang I've often just used a distributor shaft attached to a good drill. Also have used a small tank (maybe 12 inches around and about 10 tall) that has a short hose to attach to the sender hook up, a air fitting and a shut off. Fill it mostly with oil and some air. Attach it too the engine and open the valve a little till you get oil flowing everywhere. Worked for my grand father in his garage down town for decades.

Ive used all the above.  But back when i had more hair than money, i recall using 1/4 inch socket duct taped to a long 1/4 drive extention chucked tight.   Shadetree but got job done in a pinch.

I think OEM Tools #27061 is the right one for Ford FE.  I note Summit says not available, but others have them.

Several tool lines offer a locking extension for peace of mind. That's all I've ever used. And I like being able to look down and see the oil circulating.

This may be the one I've used.. a bit pricey, but I'm sure you can find them in other lines (Blue-Point, Williams, MAC, etc)

Obviously these have other uses to offset the cost.
