hello all
I am having trouble finding the Correct Driveshaft Marking (paint stripes) for my 1967 mustang fastback.
I already stripped the shaft with evaporust to bare metal and sprayed satin clearcoat.
its 67 Fastback
Built at Dearborn
289-2V V-8 Engine
Scheduled for build March 7, 1967
2.79 Conventional Rear Axle
Three-Speed Manual Transmission
3.03 3speed trans on it.

Can anyone sharepics or the order of the markings on the same specs please

First welcome to the site. Hope you find the support and information for your concours related endeavors

Unfortunately build sheets that year do not include the information you are searching for so we're left with what few original examples are available. Not aware that any have been shared here int he past - only automatic transmission marking have been. To maybe help with the search the build sheets do point out that 4 and 3 speeds shared the same drive shaft so you can widen the possible examples your looking for.

In my examples unfortunately I don't have any pictures of originals that I've confirmed came from cars equipped the way your are currently

The good thing about drive shaft marks is that if you don't find concrete answer at this time they are easy to add later in fact they might be even easier to apply then out of the car.

As far as your plans I would not suggest clear coating the drive shaft since it will yellow and or peel at some point so you'll be removing it to refinishing it from time to time.

In general, you might not have found it yet, there is an article in the library on basic paint markings. Might be worth checking out. Can't hurt  :)

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your greetings.
And thanks for the suggestions.
Regarding the clearcoat, yes you are right. It will yellow over time and peel maybe but Since I am done with the major rust removal, I just wanted to protect it. When it needs to be redone I am ready to try something else.
Yes I read hundreds of different posts about this and seeing that most say colors are the same for auto and manual trans. So at this point I just want to have at least 2 examples of 67 289 dearborn any transmission.

Thanks again.

Not sure where your getting your information from but those reporting that the markings for both manual and automatic 289s would be the same are wrong. As you can see the cropped build sheet drive line and transmission sections Ford shows that they were not. If they were then they would have been identified by the same number and you can see that the automatic does not match the manual ones. If it were my car I would also be concerned that if you apply the wrong markings you would get a deduction at a show and might miss lead others with similar cars.

3 speed - Automatic - 4 speed (shown top to bottom)

For complete disclosure there was a TSB printed that stated that both automatic and manual drive lines were the same. But they list a set of colors used on 67 automatic drive lines that we have pictures of and reports of. Since this directly conflicks with what the workers sued to build the car the TSB may be referring to replacement drive lines and that one could be used as a replacement in both applications. Will have to dig that TSB out and reread it

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Did look into another set of files from reports of paint markings from owners. This means that it was their observations alone with no pictures to document the finding so its up to you if you choose to trust them. Only a single observation from a 289 3 speed Dearborn Mustang built sometime in March

He lists them in two groups

At approximately 2/3rds from the front - 3 color lines perhaps white/gray (most likely white just dirty since they didn't use gray form these application during this period), green, yellow

2 thin lines in the rear (Appears white/gray - Same note as above) the usual ? wide, maybe an 1" apart.

He didn't share what color green it was since there are a number that were available and used during 67

Note: These are not the same colors as used on automatic 289's in 67 supporting my statement in the first part of the post

Hi Jeff,

I really appreciate the time and effort you put into researching this. Your findings on the TSB and the potential distinction between factory-installed and replacement drive lines are very insightful. I?ll definitely take another look at that TSB to see if it clarifies the intent.

The additional paint marking reports are also valuable, even without photographic confirmation. It?s good to have these owner observations as reference points, and I?ll keep them in mind when reviewing other sources.

Thanks again for your thorough work on this?I truly appreciate it!

Best,
