68 Shelby KR under side of rear valance detail
« on: March 08, 2025, 02:10:58 PM »
Wondering if anyone else has ever come across this detail on a 68 Mustang with dual exhaust or Shelby ?
This is underside shots of #2295, a very unmolested KR conv, the 2 areas above the exhaust cutouts have some sort of brushed on seam sealer or undercoating. It sure seems like its been there since day one. Any reason for this if it is in fact original ?
Possible extra paint protection against the heat from the exhaust or ?
  Thanks,  tom

It was to help with vibration cause by the exhaust note resinence. It is called out in the assemblyline manuals. You should pick up a set if interested in many of details . They are available from any of the larger Mustang vendors.

Additionally, it was a Ford assembly plant detail, nothing to do with Shelby Automotive.  Any other Mustang built that year with dual exhaust should have gotten the same treatment.

Thanks guys !  So I would use a seam sealer that I could just brush on or was a different type product used for this ?

A lot of different products will accomplish the same purpose. I use the wet or dry roofing cement for example because it gives the similar appearance and texture  once it sets up in a day or two.
