Steel wheel color with standard (poverty/dog dish) hub caps
« on: January 31, 2025, 05:32:08 AM »
Hello: On my 67 SJ coupe what shade of black was used on section of steel wheel that tire covered. With cars that had body color paint on wheels how were they masked for body color paint. With tire on wheel would there have been black paint showing on a small area of rim that rolls next to tire bead.  Thanks

It was a semi-gloss black.

Wheel covers were an option, so if no wheel covers ordered, we see body color on front of wheels with dog dish center caps.

Thanks for reply, would there be body color on back side of rim as well?

The front is body color with speckling/overspray on the black back side.

From another thread where it was originally posted

Black applied first at the supplier and the body color added at the car plant. No masking between the two

Black back side in close up. The lower left is the face of the wheel

I grabbed these photos from my website that are from a 1968...but exactly the same idea.  This shows the front and back of the wheels with the paint.

How would cars with special paint be treated?

How would cars with special paint be treated?

If you ordered a special exterior paint car without any hubcap/wheel cover option then it would be treated the same as any other car ordered with the same wheel option. Body color. Haven't found many ordered that way as it seems that those individuals were often wanted something more than a standard looking car.
