Correct trunk mat - 69 San Jose Mach I
« on: January 01, 2025, 08:00:15 PM »
What pattern(s) is considered correct for a Feb. 14th built Mach 1? I've seen the plaid as well as the spatter type and would like to know. I've currently got an original spatter pattern in my car now but not sure if its considered correct.

Seems like there were no variations through the production year at San Jose. All were what we refer to as the speckled style with the brown jute backing. Remember there was a fold down and non fold down version.
Since you have a Mach I it would have had the full underlayment  under the mat and areas where there was no mat on the passenger side - different from the sportroof underlayment.  In addition you had the drivers side cardboard trunk drop panel (forgot the formal term for it at the moment  ::) and the trunk board over the gas tank on the drivers side.

Of course there is a long discussion on the underlayment for 69 Mach I and Shelbys as well as not to make the stuff also on the site.

Original example from a car with a VIN approx 3,000 units from your cars likely VIN so it could have been built on the same day or close to.

Examples from a slightly later sample range

Some of these are included in the threads in the 69 Unrestored Picture Thread section of the site

Yes like earlier years (68 for example) typically black is what was made by the supplier of that plant.

I don't have the underlayment for mine nor do I have the driver side filler panel. Are these available in a quality reproduction?

The filler panel is available as a reproduction. Remember to bend the wings down to hold it in place once you get one

Don't believe the underlayment is available as a reproduction. A couple of companies us to sell their version but it didn't look like what we see in the pictures attached and currently they are listed as not available with no ETA available on this date.

The trunk board over the gas tank I don't believe has ever been available as a reproduction

Jeff, Do you mean the Masonite anti-rattle board to protect the tank from the spare tire? Numerous suppliers sell that although the reproductions are a little thicker and not quite identical to the originals.

Yes that was the one I was referring too. Thanks didn't know that someone was making them. Guess I haven't had the need to look for one recently.  Also guess they are making them all one size as well as thinner

There are a couple fo different sized boards used through the years so you will need to focus on the larger version. Believe there is at least one thread on the subject and I believe someone measured one or two but don't think those were 69's

Here is an original example from a 69 San Jose sportroof (top) and a coupe (bottom). Convertible and coupes used the same size board at that plant that year. Don't have one to measure at home but you could easily estimate the size using the pictures and top of the tank as reference points
