1970 Wiper pivot shaft movement
« on: December 26, 2024, 04:44:58 AM »
I cannot install one of my wiper blades because the pivot shaft moves down during installation, preventing the arm from locking into place. In the pic you can see the excessive gap between the pivot and the arm that results from the shaft movement. I was wondering if there is an internal bush inside the pivot assembly that has failed and does anyone have a pic of it?
Thanks,
Brad

I am willing to bet the aluminum flange was cored and machined for the the brass pivot pin when manufactured - no bushing . The brass pin is swedged on the bottom holding it all together.
I have one that is a little loose on the bottom, between flange and arm , and I think the pin needs to be tightened up,  and possibly some wear in hole of the linkage arm

Thanks for the information and being reassured there is nothing breakable inside, I attacked it with a hammer (gently). I moved the machine boss down the pivot shaft which snugged everything up and prevented excess movement and also tightened up the pin between flange and arm (mine was loose there also). It shows you can think too much about a problem when it only needs a good whack from a hammer.

Did you look in the 1970 Mustang Shop Manual? (It looks like the 5 volume set covers everything Ford made except tractors.)

Jim, I looked in the manuals but couldn't find anything and I suspsct its because it was delivered to Ford as a pre-assembled unit and was never meant to be pulled apart.

My loose side is LH , FYI
I will try a hammer and vise to tighten this connection
