Best way to replace plugs on driver side 428 PI
« on: November 15, 2024, 02:28:14 PM »
I replaced the right bank 4-3-2-1 with new plugs and Marti plug wires. The drivers side looks even more daunting. Does the master, booster or support have to be removed or have people been successful using other methods, because it doesn't look good.

No the master and booster do not need be removed. I find it easiest to take off the export brace and remove the tall 67 GT500 valve cover. I use a spark pug socket that has a swivel made onto it and a 3/8 extension for easiest removal of plugs. Just what i have always done.

Thanks. Don't the shocks have to come out to remove the brace? I'll have to look again.

On the Shocks,   No.   The braces all have fairly large holes.  You will need to remove the top two nuts off the shocks on both sides.  Lift up on the back and slide the brace backwards, be careful of painted surfaces.  the shock top will clear at the back, slide the brace forward an inch as the brace clears the top of the shock and then the front will clear.  As Bob said, look again.

Success! Thanks all. I was able to replace all wires and plugs on the right as is. I was able to replace the plugs and wires on the left with the brace off. I didn't need to pull the valve covers. I guess while it is off, I should repaint the brace semi gloss black as it currently is and the shock brackets a flat grey metallic it looks like.

The upper shock brackets or bee hives as they are described in the DSO papers should be painted semigloss black regardless of if reinforced style or plain style. The 67 Shelby's were engineered by Shelby to have the reinforced upper shock brackets with the thick washers welded on. Some cars however came down the assemblyline with typical upper brackets instead of the special upper brackets. The reason is ether by mistake or a supply issue but substituted non the less. 67 Shelby's have the highest incident of this unlike 65,68 or 69/70 Shelby's

Thanks. Mine, #817 built 1/26/67, has no welded reinforcement washers.

Once the plugs are out it helps to use a section of vacuum hose attached to the new plug to start it.
