machined versus polished hubcaps
« on: October 25, 2024, 04:03:14 AM »
I always thought hubcaps had machined faces but I recently came across a March 1970 Boss that had polished faces. Were polished hubcaps available or are they made-up?

What you may have discovered is that service replacements were possibly finished differently than original assembly line hubcaps and trim rings. Really popular, especially for those performance or more valuable cars, to have owners that spent the money on new caps and rings.

Jeff, I think you're spot-on and highlights that NOS/service replacement parts are not always correct.

This is what correct 1970 hubcaps on a Boss 302 would look like...there is several other versions that Ford sold and serviced including the polished ones, but this is most correct and original.  If I remember correctly the base model 1970 dog dish hubcaps were polished.

All 70 B2 (and 71 B1) got the brush finish D0AZ-1130-G hub caps with the matching brushed finish trim rings.  Same caps for 14" or 15" wheel.  In fact all 70 Mustangs with trim rings got brushed hub caps from the factory.  The 'plain chrome' finish D0AZ-H caps only came on cars that had no hub cap trim, or wheel covers.  They have no listing on a Marti, as it was the 'base' model no cost level, and the wheels were then painted body color, with just the shiny hub caps on there.  The D0AZ-G caps were superseded by the D5DZ aluminum caps. The D0AZ-G are a real tough find today in NOS......
