I am not sure about 1970 cars but 68s have the key code on one of the door locks. If everything is original a new key can be made from that code.

to remove the column switch you'll need the key inserted and then a paperclip end inserted in the little hole to release the switch assembly.  Then you can get the code (if it hasn't been rekeyed in the past)   SO
1) get a locksmith with some experience on classic cars (older guy)  OR
2) remove steering column and replace with a column you have a key for    OR
3) remove column and see if there's a way to release the switch by doing some "surgery" that way (no experience personally that way)

good luck   AL

On the cylinder of one of the door locks, typically it is the driver side door lock cylinder. Photo also shows the code location on the glove box lock if lockable.

just FYI  - it maybe a asking alot of a locksmith to use the 1970 codes  - great  - if he can get that info -  BUT  my suggestion would be to get a new set (door and ignition) from someone like Scott at West Coast Classic Cougar (yes - their the same as mustang)

Any locksmith worth his salt can do it. Also, you do not risk damaging the ignition switch or column removing the lock without a key.

Reproduction lock sets are not that good. The ones from China do not even use a standard Ford key. Meaning a Ford key is too wide to fit into those lock cylinders.

It isn't too difficult to find the code on the driver's door lock ~ I had to do it last year when it turned out there was no code on my column lock!
(my keys are very old and worn down, and only one set came with the car so I wanted to get a second set but not made from old worn out keys).

Anyhow, I was able to pull the door panel, clean up the area on the lock, stick my phone in the door and get a pic of the numbers that was good enough to zoom in on and clearly see the code.

Once you have that, you can contact WCCC, or your local locksmith, and they'll cut you a key.

WCCC can cut a key from its code. They have an original dealership key cutting machine.

It would be prudent to have a door lock available besides the code just in case for the locksmith to confirm that the made up key in fact works in the door lock or ignition. It doesn't take much of a burr on the pointed teeth and notches of the blade that was cut from numbers for key not to work.

Definitely!  I had my replacements made in person at WCCC and Scott (Krelboyne) made sure to hit them with a file to remove the burrs.  I was able to test all the keys and they worked fine.  ...except later on I discovered that some of the keys would work one way but not the other >.<  Remember that they are bi-directional, so it may work one way but when you can flip the key over it may not work the other way.

Resolved that issue pretty easily on my own with a small file though.  Just enough to take down the burrs and dull the sharp edges so they slide easier.

If you live near an area with some population you can sometimes get a mobile locksmith to come out.
I lost my truck keys while out in the back Forty (actual 4) and the guy inserted a hollow key, slid in some magic picks and within 10 minutes he had it figured out. He then went back to his truck and made me a few keys.
