Topic: Mustang Market interior door panels -- a review too!

After being disappointed with how much effort goes into making the deluxe door panels for my 67 work, I was told that the Mustang Market makes the best repops for the 70 deluxe panels so perhaps I should look into them for other years
Their advertising says they make their own, so I thought I'd try a set of 65 pony door panels for my other car.

Their website is not very well done and when I tried to buy a set I got an error.

Before I call them maybe I could solicit some feedback from you guys.

I was interested so I called. They make some but not all of the door panels they sell . I am working on a 66 standard interior and they only make that in Palomino . The black 66 standard ones they sell are Distinctive . It seems like they only make some colors of a given particular style and year . The black 67 deluxe door panels that they confirmed that they make looked nice . At least they did in the picture.

I decided to buy the 65 pony panels for my modified project from here.

As an aside, since we are dealing with multiple years, is the vinyl pattern the same from 65 through 70?

In order to review the Mustang Market (I'll call them MM from now on) I had to compare them to my factory original 67 and 70 Deluxe door panels. I think the std. panels on my 65 are replacements. Since I'm converting to Pony I had nothing with which to compare. In the details below note that I'm usually comparing these to my 67 panels.

I'll begin with an overall assessment. These appear to be very well made. The 'masonite'  panel is the correct thickness, the clip holes are well made -- more on that later --  and the cups are held in place with large head metal 'rivets.' It's left to you to open up holes for the door and window pivots, which is a plus on a modified car. The door pull openings are also left to you to cut (see pic).
But the most important part, to me, is that the panel has a soft, supple feel. If you push in on the outer covering it actually gives a bit. Very much like original 67 Dlx panels. The texture in the vinyl looks very much like my 67 Dlx panel. If I compare the suppleness to my NPD sourced Dashes Direct (DD) 67 Dlx panels, there is actually no comparison. The DD panels feel like hard plastic, not vinyl, when pushed in. I can't imagine the DD panels with feel nice on my elbow. See pic below to compare

One of the things that led me here was a review by a fellow enthusiast and restorer that ordered a set for his 70 deluxe. I'll be visiting him tomorrow and will review that in another post on this thread.

Here I'm applying the same pressure to both the 67 DD and the MM panels. The MM is very close to my original 67 Dlx in the suppleness area.


Here is the grain pattern on the 65/6 MM panel. I'm using an LED light off to the side to show the pattern. The same light is used in the pics that follow.

You can spend a bunch of time with a 90 degree angle pic trying to get all this excess out. The MM does not have this excess goop.

I am going to to order the 67 MM panel and sell the DD panel. Offers?
