Topic: voltage regulator mounting

Working on the car in my signature. I have an AMK packet with 4 screws & a start washer. Which screw is the star washer installed? The assembly manual text notes, "55876-236 SCREW & WASHER ASSY. (6-REQD.)". The illustrations in the manual are not clear, lower screw view is obstructed. However, it does not appear there is a washer on any of the screws. My though is the lower screw with the radio noise filter.

There are 6 required total (or 7, because Ford can't count, or 5, because Ford still can't count) per the "1969 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual" (AM0026 pg 4), two for regulator mounting, two for starter solenoid mounting, two for the starting motor relay mounting (which is actually an alternate starter relay) and a ground at the regulator (omitted on the 1970 Electrical installation page). No (lock of ground) washers were harmed (or used) in this particular installation.

Back to part of your original question -

Ford used the star washers (both internal and external toothed types) to get a better ground connection. If that washer is not called out on the assembly drawing (and I don't see that it is), don't use it.
Looking at "Ford Car Parts" (aka MPC), the 1975 ed, illustration section 140, pg 26 (see this forum's library for down loads), the odd number screw called out for a ground is actually used to hold the bottom of the voltage regulator AND the wiring ground, therefor the quantity of screws is "4", per the AMK pack. There may be a TBS (Technical Service Bulletin) that adds the washer, but if that's the case, it would (or may) be included in the MPC. To further confuse you, screw 55876-S36 is obsolete and replaced for service use by 381922-S2 (don't use this screw).

While your at it don't forget the radio suppressor on the bottom voltage regulator screw unless your car didn't come from the factory with a radio.




Here are some pictures of original mounting screws for the voltage regulator. Appears no star washers under the head of the screw on any of these. Original finish of zinc dichromate

Yep, new noise filter should be here today. First one arrived with the bracket detached. With the amount of corrosion between the the bracket and the filter I would say it was barely attached by the manufacture.

Likely splitting hairs but I?m going to ask anyway.:

1) Bolt, ground, filter, regulator?
2) Bolt, filter, ground, regulator?
3) Bolt, filter, regulator, ground?

Bummer - guess it would cost a couple dollars more if they welded the two together like originally. So goes the reproduction parts and market at times. Guess its glue or very thin two side industrial tape time
